Does Bettinelli save anything?

Agree with all of the above. It is definitely the shots on target to goals ratio that I was thinking about. It just feels like if there is a shot on target, 9 times out of 10 it's a goal. He saves next to nothing. That's before you get onto everything else. He costs us goals in most games.

If we had Randolph this season it’s hard not to believe we would be at least 6 or 7 more points better off at this stage and probably more at the season end. Shame

To be honest we would be fine with him IF the defensive side of our game hadn't come apart.

Dimi originally came in to make training competitive under Mowbray but ended up breaking records and becoming a cult hero. The defensive side of our game was so well drilled and so good, from back to front, that we only needed a bloke to stay awake and do the basics. He was a decent 'keeper in his time but that's about it. Karanka tried to replace him how many times? Turned out it didn't matter.

Bettinelli would be fine if the team was functioning properly. He was fine until January. Once Fry and Tav are back and we've picked up a couple of wins it'll have settled down again. But the team definitely needs to stop passing it back to him so much.

Agree with a lot of this but I don't ever think I've seen a keeper play for us so useless at 'shot stopping'. During Randolph's time here he used to pull off a good save or block, when you thought we would surely concede, at least once a game often more. Bettinelli gets nowt.
Yes, I can't disagree. Most common Whatsapp phrase this season has been 'the keeper could have done better there'. It does seem to be the basics at times and I guess the positive is that that is something that can be coached. It's all coming to a head a bit at the moment. I'm still more concerned about certain other positions on the pitch than the keeper..

His distribution is awful.

It's not 1999 anymore, goalkeepers cannot just hoik it down the field hoping for the best thinking it's fine because they've cleared their lines and done the job.

Even central defenders these days are more likely to try and pass out from the back than just hoof it forward. I've noticed this even more and more in the non league game too.

Bettenelli is a dying breed of keeper soon to be extinct.
To be fair the team is told not to play out from the back, hence the keeper has to kick it long.

Striker and the keeper our most poor area for me. Midfield not great either at the Moment but that could possibly change when Tav is back or a tactical change. The keeper worries me massively

I think that does Dimi a huge disservice. When he was called into action in those two seasons he made some big, big saves for us. Saves that Bettinelli simply wouldn't make. Yes, we reduced the number of shots Dimi faced but even then it wasn't a case of get the shot on target and its a goal. It's not like Bettinelli was any better earlier in the season. I still felt the same then - shot on target generally means a goal.

Also Dimi instilled confidence into the fans. Imagine us fans being at the game with Bettinelli in goal he would have had pelters by now, Dimi never got that.

Dimi was a jobbing 'keeper without a club. He played about 100 games in the six or so years between leaving Hartlepool and joining Boro. He did indeed make some big saves for us but he was offered an incredible level of protection by his teammates. My point about him is just that he was a decent 'keeper who stayed concentrated and did the basics. He did them very well for us.

I would also say that Bettinelli made some good saves earlier on in the season. I thought he was decent when he first came into the team. I think the team not defending as well as it was a few weeks back has exposed him over the past month or so. My hope is that we get our best players back to fitness and pick up a couple of wins. I don't think it's a coincidence that our keeper has started to look worse when we've had Fry and Dijksteel missing games, a new right back coming into the team, a teenager making his first real starts and a wing-back playing out of position at full back.

Your description of Dimi is accurate. Betinelli is much, much worse than Dimi was.

We might have to agree to disagree Adi. He isn't a brilliant goalkeeper by any stretch but I do genuinely think he's been exposed by problems elsewhere in the side of late. Once Fry is back in the team we'll be much better.

In my opinion Warnock views conceding possession in our half as a cardinal sin. We will pass it back to the keeper if there is any pressure on the back 4 and they are facing their goal. Bettinelli doesn't always go long. He goes long if there is any sort of press on by the opposition. I can't remember which team it was but he started playing short almost everything to the centrebacks after about half an hour one game.
A big lad who can win headers definitely helps, but more important is that the long ball is challenged and that there are enough players nearby to pick up the seconds. The lack of someone to get on the end of crosses concerns me more than getting on the end of bettinellis hoofs.
