Do we play McCabe ahead of Barlaser?

If he isn't going to be loaned out then I don't see why not.

A 17 year old midfielder has been a key player for Sunderland this season.

Ideally we all want Morris back though and for him to stay fit.
 
i was thinking same thing. hes quicker than barlaser and puts more effort in. keeps it neat and tidy. rather give him a run than suffer watching barlaser
 
I think our main problem is Barlaser and McCabe should be back up to Hackney and neither are suited to playing with Hackney.

Howson is more suit to covering Morris but unfortunately they’ve both been injured. Added to Howson struggling to do sat tue sat.

I think we need a player to compete with Morris who is better defensively. I’d keep Barlaser until the end of the season to cover Hackney but then move him on and use McCabe as the back up.

If we get that extra cm in now then I’d let McCabe go on loan.
 
We need a proper number 6 as back up to Morris. Look at the last 2 goals we’ve conceded, ball is half cleared to the edge of the box and there’s no midfielder anywhere near to put pressure on the goalscorer.

In a 4-2-3-1 you need your midfield to have a 6, an 8 and a 10. Playing 2 8s and a 10 leaves you very open

Exactly. Lots of people on this board would tear the lad to pieces after a few mistakes.

It’s like they were all as good as Messi.
 
You'd give him a go..I mean Barlaser has been woeful for the last few games. The very least he should be coming off the bench.

Although the real issue is as stated above. McCabe or Barlaser cannot play with Hackney. They are all too similar. That's why Morris has been a revelation. He could be a perfect foil for either of them. Howson is the best back up. Yet he's also crocked..

I've been giving Barlaser pelters. I'm sure he would look much better alongside Morris. That or Morris would make him look better. We don't have anyone else like Morris. He's been a massive miss..

Totally agree.

There was an angle on the replay yesterday showing the ball out wide with Wieman and Barlaser.

Barlaser could see across and didn’t change his pace to get to the edge of the box. Any defensive minded player makes that movement and would’ve at least been closer to pressure the rebound.

This 100% Barlaser alongside Morris looked fine. Barlaser alongside Hackney = disaster

We need another midfielder who can tackle, put their foot in and do abit of dirty work.

Where necessary, and if Hackney, morris and howson are not available for whatever reason then the next person in line ought to be McCabe because he’s the future, Barlassor is the past.
I’d prefer to see him come on for the remainder of a game than Barlassor because he looks ok

I’m not sure what some of you were watching but McCabe is nowhere near ready for the first team and yesterday’s performance showed that. Below is my reply to @B_G regarding a comment of him having a solid game.

I don’t feel McCabe did have a solid game but then no one did. We can make excuses for McCabe but not those around him. I don’t think he’s ready for the first team and would only weaken us further in the middle.

His time will come.

Absolutely this. We need someone capable of playing instead of Morris when he's not available and, ideally, able to play alongside him when Hackney isn't available.
 
I feel like the obvious move, and we know it won't happen, is to move to a 3 man midfield until Morris returns.

I'd say there's a very strong argument to say we don't have the players to play a 2 at the minute.

That could be McCabe but he could also play Gilbert or McGree there.

Of course downside is then what do you do with the forward positions, but you could (for example) play Azaz on the left and have him drift central when in possession. Leaving Lath and Doak as they were.

The point is there are other options than trying to persist with a 2 who are weak off the ball (which they all are other than Morris).

Right now, our midfield consists of Hackney, Barlaser and Azaz which is paper-thin. While Howson and Morris are unavailable I have no idea how to fix it.

Possibly we have to go to three at the back with the third centre back being able to step in front of the other two. We don't really have wing-backs but we can still do something like

GK
Rav - Fry - Edmundson/Clarke
Dijksteel - Hackney - Barlaser - Azaz/McGree - Engel/Borges
Doak - ELL

Have Barlaser as a deep-lying playmaker while Hackney and Azaz play as #8s. Basically, we're swapping out the left-forward (currently Zoidberg) for an extra centre-back who is there to close down threats on the end edge of the box.

I thought McCabe played really well yesterday

Took the ball under pressure, moved it quick, did a lovely turn in our box

As has been said above I noticed Barlaser for our goal, to me it’s not an excuse to say “he’s not defensively minded”

Every player on the pitch needs to understand the game, read it and do what’s needed

An old saying but you defend from the front, why is Barlaser excused of this?

I’m done with Barlaser, he’s not good enough and will not improve

When we signed him I thought it made complete sense, from the area, experienced in the league but we have to accept it has not worked out and he needs to leave ASAP
 
Watching the game yesterday, i was thinking I can't believe Barlaser has been playing ahead of him ! And thought Barlaser should been subbed not McCabe.
