Deep and meaningful song lyrics

Threads like this always remind me of the time Michael Stipe was asked by a music journalist what lyric he was most proud of and he replied straight faced "Egypt was troubled by the horrible asp".

The Dj at the kids club here in Crete introduced a song last night at the kids disco as a very very powerful song.......
then played The Hokey Cokey 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Bob Dylan - Positively 4th Street

[Verse 1]
You got a lot of nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning
You got a lot of nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that’s winning

[Verse 2]
You say I let you down
You know it’s not like that
If you’re so hurt
Why then don’t you show it?
You say you lost your faith
But that’s not where it’s at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

[Verse 3]
I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You’re in with
Do you take me for such a fool
To think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don’t know to begin with

[Verse 4]
You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say “How are you? Good luck!”
But you don’t mean it
When you know as well as me
You’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once
And scream it

[Verse 5]
No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I’d rob them
And now I know you’re dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don’t you understand
It’s not my problem

[Verse 6]
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
To see you

You're my love, you're my sweetest thing
Don't shy away, don't shy away
Every night makes me hate the days
Can't get enough of your love
Am I wrong? Am I so unkind?
Show me the way, don't turn away
I can't hide all these thoughts in my mind
Every moment, I'm just thinking of you

(Ooh-ah) Just a little bit
(Ooh-ah) A little bit more
(Ooh-ah) Just a little bit
You know what I'm looking for
(Ooh-ah) Just a little bit
(Ooh-ah) A little bit more
(Ooh-ah) Just a little bit
I'll give you love you can't ignore

The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick
The whole thing, I think it's sick

Joni Mitchell - Little Green.

The "little green" she refers to in the lyrics is her daughter, who she had to give up for adoption when she was a teenager.

The "non-conformer" she refers to is the child's absent father.

Born with the moon in cancer
Choose her a name she will answer to
Call her green and the winters cannot fade her
Call her green for the children who've made her
Little green, be a gypsy dancer
He went to california
Hearing that everything's warmer there
So you write him a letter and say, "her eyes are blue."
He sends you a poem and she's lost to you
Little green, he's a non-conformer

Just a little green
Like the color when the spring is born
There'll be crocuses to bring to school tomorrow
Just a little green
Like the nights when the northern lights perform
There'll be icicles and birthday clothes
And sometimes there'll be sorrow
Child with a child pretending
Weary of lies you are sending home
So you sign all the papers in the family name
You're sad and you're sorry, but you're not ashamed
Little green, have a happy ending

Just a little green
Like the color when the spring is born
There'll be crocuses to bring to school tomorrow
Just a little green
Like the nights when the northern lights perform
There'll be icicles and birthday clothes
And sometimes there'll be sorrow.

Dylan is an exceptional lyricist. Good choice Roofie.

There's something warm, there's something nice,
I can't stand to see you when you are cold, nor can I stand being out of your life

You when you sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and your brain starts have wierd and wandering conversatiuons with you? happened this morning and me an the brain had a vigorous debate over which song we thought had the deepest and most meaningful lyrics.

Early contenders were Barbie girl and baby Shark do do dooo

We them considered Bruce Springsteen's The River or Thunder Road. The Beatles Elanor Rigby was included but eventually Brain and I concluded that it was John Lennon's Imagine.

Any other contenders?
Prefer In my life to Imagine from a lyrical pov

The the.. this is the day. I want this at my funeral

Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
You pull back the curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue
You pull back the curtains
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
This is the day (This is the day)
Your life will surely change
This is the day (This is the day)
Your life will surely change

For me there's only one song full of meaningful lyrics, Eleanor Rigby. Those lines are timeless. Two of the greatest albums ever made, and best selling, are Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles and Bat out of Hell by Meatloaf.

Bat out of Hell was in the charts for almost the whole of the 1980s decade, such was its popularity. The lyrics 'And can't you see my faded Levis bursting apart' from the track For crying out loud epitomise the sexual tension, and coming of age, of that era for teenagers in America.

I love the Simon and Garfunkel songs. My favourite line is 'I said be careful his bow tie is really a camera' from the track America. That captured the paranoia of the 1960s and the cold war. My all time favourite Eagles song is The Last Resort. The lyrics to that song always blow me away. And my eyes fill up.

You might see,
Snow drenched rooftops,
A stalactite falls to the alley like an arrow from Cupid into you,
When the world has stopped,
And it’s pretty as a picture

You might not notice,
How cold it gets,
When the gin runs out and history is born again
Well, you can’t even think,
How you wanna be with her,

Well here we are darling,
Jam never tasted so good,
And nothing ever felt so warm as you,
Above this old world shop with its,
Old world trinkets,
But how dare we even think it,

There’s a cardboard box,
With shivering feet,
Full of distant memories and nearby fantasies of,
Good heels and cashmir socks,
There’s a Cold War on the world,
That’s what I heard

I opened up,
Told her I’m lonely,
Said don’t you know me?
She said, who you talking to?
Her memories faded,
Eradicated,
She’s been infiltrated,
But how I waited,
Because I know there’s something,
I just can’t get to it,
I wasted years,
How I held you near,
And I tasted fear,
How I held you near,
And I fought the combine,
Til they let me outside,
Where it was pretty as a picture

Genius from start to finish

There must be some kinda way out here, said the joker to the thief.
There’s just too much confusion, I can’t get no relief.

Dylan, genius.

Or as Hendrix said “this is a song by some cat named Dylan” double genius.

The thing about lyrics is all are subjective. The person writing them does so from their experience, and the chances are that experience will resonate with lots of people. Other songs are delibrately written to stir the emotions and at some point people will go through the same type of experience, so relate to that song.
