Declan Rice- how over rated is this guy?

This is an unfair bump as he started to kick on back end of last season.

He's world-class now and is showing it every week for spam.

Not really unfair. 14 months ago some called him bog standard, a pot noodle of a player, not worth anywhere near £30m. Now he’s played in an International final, is bossing games week in week out at the age of 22 and is being talked about in terms of being a £100m player. There’s no doubt that he’s improved from 21 to 22 (fancy that he!) but he was nothing like the distinctly average player some people thought he was a year ago.

It’s the same with Mount and to a lesser extent Phillips. Written off as overrated rubbish but still young and/or inexperienced and improving all the time. Yet both played in the Euro 2020 final and Mount had a sublime assist for the winner in the Champions League Final.

With these 3 and the likes of Bellingham, Foden, Gallagher, Smith-Rowe and Elliott, England will have some great midfielders to select from in 2022 and beyond.

To be fair this one is even better (22/6/2021)

Ha, just goes to show how easy it is to get it wrong when it comes to football. I don't think I'm on either thread but willing to admit I thought he was pretty average this time last year too. He's the sort of player (like Henderson) who is very much an unsung hero, but key to a side's success. I think even harder to appreciate these sorts of players on TV too.

Nice dose of humble pie for a few (mentioning no names) who don't like to accept they are ever wrong on footballing matters.

I do think he's been distinctly average for England over the last few years, my opinion on that hasn't changed.

I rarely got a chance to watch West Ham last year with the pubs shut, so I've obviously missed many of his performances there last season.
Fully prepared to hold my hands up and admit that he's clearly better than I thought, as he's been brilliant for them this season.

Hopefully it transfers over to England too.

When I first went to university, if we had nothing else to do on a Saturday afternoon we would go down and watch the local second division club and invariably our conversation afterwards was about how useless the young full back was. Not long after we graduated Viv Anderson had won the League Championship, two European Cups and was an England regular.

Sorry, what!?

Hands up, I couldn't see why he was getting a game for England. Now, for me he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

On domestic performances, absolutely.

I still don't remember too many good performances from him in an England shirt.

At the Euros there's only really the game against Croatia that stands out in my memory for him playing well, and even then Kalvin Phillips put in a better performance.

But I've no issue with him being picked for England on the basis of how he's playing for West Ham.

He was fantastic in the final.

I'll admit that out of all the matches at the Euros, it's only the final that's a blur to me because of the occasion (and drink), add to that it's a match I've tried to avoid remembering because of the outcome and disgusting scenes surrounding it.

Happy to be wrong on that front as it's the biggest match any of them have ever played in and the match ratings from the day seem to back you up on that.

I actually thought although Phillips stated the tournament well, Rice was carrying him in the last few games, he was everywhere.
