Declan Rice- how over rated is this guy?

If he wasn't playing for a London club, he'd be nowhere near that England squad.

There's about 10 better english players in his position.

Some of the reports suggesting he's worth £30m+ are quite frankly ridiculous.

Fair play if West Ham manage to get that, but if they do, they should be taken to court for daylight robbery.

Distance covered is a bit hit and miss. Does that mean with ball? Or running around? Even passes completed is not a giver. Are they good productive passes?

We have had plenty of 'puts in a shift' players. Don't mean they are decent.

I'm not saying he's cack. Just very overrated and most west ham fans say if Chelsea offer 60mil get shot. That said he's apparently a very good CB but don't like playing in the back 4-5.

You could maybe see him in that role. Very comfortable in possession and short passes. I genuinely think he would be worth half of his value if he still played for Ireland.

That was kind of my point, look at Philips how hard he had to go to get a call up.

Can't agree with that.
Philips being called up from a Championship season is very unusual, there'd have been no controversy if he hadn't been.

He had to get in The prem to get the cap though despite not kicking a ball in it.

still can’t work that one out.

Until we start to realise that the ‘defensive’ midfield position is more about distribution than covering distance then football will continue to be staid, Pirlo and Busquets were fantastic exponents of the art of filling holes when they were out of possession and creating something when in possession, the importance of creativity in that position is massively overlooked.

So true.

Reality is we're not blessed with great options for the holding midfielder role. We'd love to have a Paul Ince or Owen Hargreaves to choose from but reality is we haven't got that now.

Rice is probably more or less the best option we have for the holding midfielder role. It would be a waste to play Henderson there because he's been brilliant for Liverpool playing as a box-to-box midfielder. Players should play in the same role for England as they do for their club.

The lad had some of the best stats in the premier league for tackling, interceptions and distance covered last season.

Of course he’s not as good as Pirlo or Busquets, but quite a few of the England players aren’t anywhere near as good as the best players in their positions over the last 5/10 years.

Joe Gomez isn’t anywhere near as good as Ramos / Chiellini. Rashford is nothing on Ronaldo etc either.

As for distance covered not being important, it hasn’t done Kante any harm.

The fact of the matter is, he might not be the 2nd coming of Makelele but he’s right up there with the best English defensive midfielders at present, as we are not exactly spoilt for choice at the minute.

I don’t mind Winks but could be difficult for him as I am not sure he will play too much for Spurs this season.

He’s the type of footballer that for some reason seems to be a necessity for a few English sides. Dier, McTominay, Matic, Longstaff other examples.

Decent in the air, cover ground, get their foot in, act as a shield between defence and midfield. Distribution is a secondary concern.
