Dan Barlaser

He is our best passing midfielder.
Very very underrated by some posters on this site. he always looks forward, starts the play, and looks for the killer pass, sometimes risky but every team needs a forward thinking midfielder.
Has been asked to play deeper role of late, just in front on the back four, which I think is not his best position, but his passing skills shone today, and his linking up with the forward line was 1st class.
Maybe playing in that deeper role has been the catalyst for his improvement 🤔
Swapping his and Howson's roles has certainly made a difference to both of them.
He has looked a bit more progressive than Howson, seeing the whole picture, starting things from between the centre halves against Port Vale and WBA and Howson has looked more comfortable than Barlaser playing on the half turn further up the pitch.

Yet at half time a bloke in the loo said we were carrying Barlaser 🙄
Clearly has made his mind up before every game even starts
As have you apparently. He was decent today but fairly quiet until tha superb pass. And then had another if not better pass minutes later. He was decent in second half but would say Howson was the better of the two. Outstanding today. Out on his feet at the end though.

He was giving his opinion but you had already decided he was wrong so you already had your opinion.
I decided he was wrong because Barlaser had played well in the first half
So yes I had an opinion on his performance today. That bloke had an opinion before the match on Barlaser that wasn't changed by a decent first half
He wasn't 'carried' by the rest of the team in the first half

Coming late to the thread about today's game but Barlaser was superb today. He dictated the pace of the game and some of his passing was sublime. He and Howson ran the show.

All the negative focus appears to be on one, under hit pass, on the half way line, which Fry dealt with 40 yards from goal. You'd think he gave the ball away on the penalty spot. I'll admit I couldn't see the 'penalty' incident from the NE corner so if he got that wrong then hands held up.

Rogers and (particularly) Greenwood lost the ball more than any other players today, in the wrong places on the pitch and gave away more soft, dangerous free kicks but get none of the criticism and in Rogers' case is getting lauded for MOTM.

Basically, at the end of the day, people see what they want to see.

It's the difference in some people's eyes between X " made a mistake , he was at fault ' ..
And Y ( who they like ). " Tried something, and it never came off "

I wasn't really sure about Barlaser myself until the Bradford cup game, where I paid a bit of attention to what he was doing for the whole match (I'd thought him a bit ponderous before that). At that time, late September, he divided opinion even more than now. But it's when I woke up to how important he was to the team performance, just doing the little, simple things tidily and progressively. Kind of watched him closely ever since. So yeah, I've seen his **** ups as well (ie v Stoke). But that Bradford game was where I woke up... and the first time I went through the extended highlights afterwards and noted all his key contributions. I've done it most games since.
I think Carrick will rotate the midfield according to the opposition when Hackney is back but, despite Howson's good showing recently, I think first choice pairing in CM will be Barlaser and Hackney. I think O'Brien will play wider or further forward. His crossing was superb in that Bradford game.

This thread highlights football fans perfectly 😂
Barlaser was excellent today, best game in a Boro shirt.
But that doesn’t mean everyone who has previously discussed any of his poor performances is a clueless idiot.
Same goes for any player - they have a good game after a few poor/under-par showings and all the ‘I told you he was excellent! You know nothing about football’ crowd appear.
It works both ways of course, and a player has a few good games then one poor game and the ‘I told you he was shiiite’ crowd come out.
Maybe, just maybe, like all of us, players have days when they are on it and days when they are off it. Only the very best in the world have that magic ability of being able to be consistently ‘on it’.

Or maybe some folk noticed that he was a good player a while ago, even if he wasn't having games where he was visibly outstanding. Perhaps it's you who illustrates football fans perfectly, taking an entrenched view that a player isn't up to it and slowly having to re-align ... with the narrative "well he used to be rubbish, but he's getting better".

Just a thought ;)

The reality is he’s had more poor games than good games. If he can keep performing like he did yesterday then he will have turned it around. Hopefully he can continue in that vein as he was great yesterday. But he has had some shockers for us.

Perfectly put.
But there will always be a "lad" who knows best. ;)

I think you’ve misread my post. I didn’t say he’s rubbish.
It also wasn’t aimed at anybody in particular, was a more generic observation that this thread perfectly sums us all up ( and the same could apply to any fans, of any club, regarding pretty much any player except maybe those who are the very best)

Yeah, and I was teasing too.
