So, listening to an excellent RockBlock on Planet Rock, they played ‘When the Levee Breaks’, by Led Zep. Not only one of my favourite Zep tracks, but one of my all time faves.
And it’s a cover.
I never knew.
Looking forward to discovering the original. Any others out there?

The original was by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Millie. I love it but I know the original blues tunes aren't everyone's cuppa.
Funnily enough it was hearing Zepplins version and whispering Bob Harris mentioning it was a cover that made me look for the original.
Millie gets a songwriting credit on the Zepplin one apparently.

Songs that I liked before realising they were cover versions were…

Pixies - Head On
Nirvana - Love Buzz*
The Breeders - Happiness is a Warm Gun
Guns N’ Roses - Mama Kin
Guns N’ Roses - Nice Boys
Bananarama - Venus*

*both originally by a band called Shocking Blue. This is the answer to any future music quizzes where the question is ‘what is the link between Bananarama and Nirvana’. 👍🏻

I was into nirvana before I was into Bowie. Didn’t realise man who sold the world wasn’t nirvana’s

Tiffany - Think We’re Alone Now
Manfed Mann - The Mighty Quinn

Depends how far back we’re going, I’ve known the above 2 were for a long time now.
