Covers that you never knew were covers.

Memphis Minnie is a very interesting character and did all sorts of stuff but some of you will know Honey Bee by Muddy Waters - originally Bumble Bee by Memphis Minnie

I've a feeling I have When the Levee Breaks by Joe Bonnamassa on some weird obscure CD

Minnie was born Louisa Douglas in 1897 in Louisiana. She was probably the first woman to play an electric guitar in the early 1940s

Not really a cover as such but summer dance classic Sunchyme by Dario G is based on Dream Academy's Life in a Northern Town

Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nails with Hurt but it's often considered the other way around

Ring of fire by Johnny cash was a cover also if a song by his wife.

Not quite a cover .. but I still despise Rod Stewart for denying stealing from this ..
( Although by all accounts it was settled appropriately)

One of the most famous Northern Soul songs ever, and sang by Gloria Jones who is mother to Marc Bolan's son.
Know about Tainted Love, but only recently found that 'What' by Soft Cell was also a cover. When I was younger thought Paul Young's 'Love of The Common People' was an original.

Guns N’ Roses - Sweet Child O’ Mine

Kind of. Australian Crawl were a band on the Geffen label and released a song called Unpublished Critics years before Sweet Child O’ Mine. Also, Guns N’ Roses have prior form for releasing a song by an Australian band, Rose Tattoo’s Nice Boys. 🤔

Duff from GN’R thinks it’s sounds remarkably similar but it’s just a coincidence.

Hmmm 🤔

What, by Judy Street, another Northern Soul classic.

Edit:- I've just googled it, and it wasn't even a Judy Street original but by Melinda Marx (so I've learnt something from this thread)

You cant extend it that far, unless you're counting every sampled record as a cover ?

That could be a good follow up thread though - famous samples and where they originally came from. There's a few decent records released that focus on just that....

This thread from a few years ago covered very similar ground

I had no idea that Sigue Sigue Sputnik's "Love Missile F1-11" was a cover of the b-side of Paper Lace's follow up single after "Billy Don't Be A Hero" called "The Night Chicago Died"
David Bowie covered it. I didn't know Degville and James were in Paper Lace :D you made me track down & listen to the b-side of The Night Chicago Died. I will not forgive that

Hendrix - all along the watchtower

Brian Jones who Hendrix idolised was supposed to play on this song but Jones was so off his face, Hendrix had to tell him to leave the studio. Imagine being told off by Jimi Hendrix for taking too many drugs. That should have been a wake up call.😬
Then Hendrix fell out with his Bass player who buggered off to the pub, so the bass guitar you hear on the record was actually played by Jimi Hendrix on an upside down bass guitar.🤯
