I can semi-understand people banding around these crazy numbers if it were 3-5 years ago, but it's not.
Teams are pretty skint, and these types of players can only go to certain teams, the audience for them is small.
Breaking it down, for Giles (who I really rate):
- He's only going to get a game in England, not likely to go abroad
- He won't be interested in going to an average/ poor side, either top Champo or Prem
- He's not suited to a back four in a team which won't have the ball much (most new prem teams)
- Who else, in that limited choice of teams needs a left back, like us?
- Is Giles defensively good enough for OUR back 4, if we go up?
- Who else in the prem could, and would play him in a back 4, keep in mind he's not had a sniff at Wolves?
- What other options do all those teams have?
- Who could commit to the type of contract which would come with a £8m plus fee, ie maybe 4 years @ 40k (£8m contract)?
- We couldn't afford that, not for a left back, not when we would need to outlay for other areas
- He's not got the same hype as Spence, and we had Spurs pants down on that deal, and he's not had a look in
- No player should be thinking of moving to a side where they won't get a look in, but it's only really those clubs who can pay top whack.
Sure, he might be "worth" £8-10m, but "worth" is only dependent on those bidding, and what money they have, it's not so much a seller's market, there's more player power now, and most of the buying clubs are skint. The last thing any club wants to do is lose a player like Giles for nothing, so they would likely get forced into taking something more like £5m, maybe £8m if there were a few teams interested, but which other two teams have that money for a left back in the Champo, or could spend that and risk him in a back 4? Keep in mind he can always run his contract down on loans and then he goes where he wants, and they get zero.
