Coalmine gets the green light

Just to put a bit of perspective on the production of coal -

Cumbria mine forecast production - 2 million tonnes per year

China 2022 forecast production - about 4 billion tonnes

The scale of coal mining and consumption in eastern countries is off the scale, far more than people realise.
Yeah it's that argument again! Does that mean we should happily open up loads of coal mines then? It's like saying we should invade Belgium, because look at what Russia are doing...

No, you misinterpret me, I’m against the mine but I think we should be aware that coal mining (and other industrial activity) takes place on a colossal scale in other parts of the world.

Anything we do here really is just a drop in the ocean.

The mine has been passed because the Tories are at heart in favour of fossil fuels and general exploitation, they believe in the freedom to make money above all else.

I completely understand that but as a world leader in this, and having made a commitment at the last COP, opening up a new coal mine sends the compete wrong message, and makes it even less likely for other countries to follow
Yes agree, the government should be consistent and clean, also this country should not be deindustrialised and then re industrialised at the whim of the Tories.

I was more drawing attention to the massive scale of coal mining and consumption that goes on in other parts of the world, these climate targets have no chance in reality.

Yeah, fair point. It just frustrates me though people excuse any enviornmentally damaging thing we do by saying "but China". Sorry I misunderstood
