Chuba's Statement in the Echo

We as fans are being played all round. Chuba will stay for more money, the club are rightly trying to pay the minimum. I suspect there hasn’t been a single bid as yet.
Yes, lots of smoke and mirrors I think.

It's likely the club haven't offered a contract, in the literal sense, because the two positions are so far apart.

I've always felt that he'll try to run his contract down and leave for nothing next summer, or better still stay as a PL if we mange to go up.

His agent meanwhile will be testing the market and courting other clubs, using their terms as a bargaining tool to drive up the clubs offer.

If the figures are as far apart as reported then I think the club will be looking to cash in and move on and I get that position entirely.

The out of his control statement seems to either imply that the club might want to move him on. Or that there needs to be room on the wage budget for the club to make the offer he wants. Either way. I'm glad he wants to stay and that he seems to be open to a new contract.

I'm sure he wants to play in the Premier league. But I think he understands that it's rare to be in the position that he is in at the club. I think he'd be open to us making a reasonable offer to him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

He hasn't said that he's open to a new contract has he?? Unless I've missed it.

His twitter post said that he wasn't making demands that were beyond what Boro would or could pay. I'm reading between the lines there. But it's very much implied that he's open to a new contract.

Chuba, it’s not out of your control. You pick up a 10 pence BIC pen, sign your name on a piece of paper and earn millions of pounds. Simple! (y)

Delicate situation .... could go either way. Without any firm offers he will run his contract down and gamble on his incredible form continuing into the coming season ...Boro wont want to commit to prem level wages for sure

I think he has come out to say that it's not him asking for silly money and it's the club that are holding things up. Like a lot of jobs if you sign a new contract you would like to think you would get a pay rise. I honestly think the club want to sell him to be able to bring in more players as we don't have a lot of money.

Jeebus, the way people read so much into the smallest little sentence and come up with totally different theories is astounding. It's no wonder the club or players don't like to make too many public statements on these things. Of course it's out of his hands. One of a number of reasons could be behind that and its a bog standard media reply that any player in his situation would give and have given on countless occasions in the past.

Exactly this
A premeditated answer lifted from the players book of responses.
All he has done is….. ‘insert name here’.

Lad I play football with was at Rockliffe when the team were away in training camp. He bumped into Chuba. He said he wasnt at training camp due to injury. When asked about his future he said he has really enjoyed his time here but things are complicated.

Fantastic if he stays but no worries if he goes either. If Akpom does move on it can only be for Premier League football which is fair enough. I can’t imagine he fancies going back to Greece, or another lower type European league.

It's easy for a player to say he wants to stay, but saying and doing are two different things.
Most player contracts will be complicated, release clauses, bonuses, wage increases on team progress, etc etc
The truth is, he enjoyed playing for us and for Carrick last year, and he hit a purple patch, was it a one off? or can he repeat last years efforts? who knows.
What we do know is that Chuba holds all the aces, he can let his contract run down and talk to other clubs in January, or demand a cracking contract within the club.
The longer this standoff takes puts the club under pressure to possibly cash in, or risk losing him for nothing, the club cannot allow that to happen.
Hope he signs, however I'm having my doubts.
