Chuba's Statement in the Echo

"Out of my control" he is talking absolute nonsense. As is the club over a delicate situation.

Another factor is at his age it’s probably the last chance for a really big contract. I wouldn’t blame him making sure it’s the right deal regardless of the club offering it.

Nothing ever changes.

I remember Bernie Slaven being asked by Roger Tames after we beat Newcastle 4 - 1 at the last game of the season once if he would still be at the Boro the following season and he said ‘I hope so’.

In fairness to the likes Chuba they are one barren run from being out of the team and forgotten about for ever, look at Jed last season after his dream move to Spurs turned sour.

They are in a volatile environment.

I can definitely see both sides. Chubas side, wants to stay but wants a deal that reflects his current value. Is it ££, length of contract......🤷🏻‍♂️

The club give him a huge pay rise, other senior pros could get narked and the excellent dressing room environment is knacked. And, any new player who comes in will/could use Chubas deal as a benchmark.

Fine lines.

Just hope -

1. Chuba gets fit and finds last season's form and
2. Deal gets sorted somehow.

He’s our star player and the best we’ve had in the team for a very very long time. Club needs to think of the fans and what they want as no1 priority. Oh and after reading that PD Ports story I dearly hope Gibson isn’t involved in the negotiations……….

I'm starting to think he'll start the season a Boro player with no contract renewal. He will sign a contract in January either for us or another team (with a large signing on fee) depending on how we've started the season.

Probably being advised by his agent to play the long game.

The out of his control statement seems to either imply that the club might want to move him on. Or that there needs to be room on the wage budget for the club to make the offer he wants. Either way. I'm glad he wants to stay and that he seems to be open to a new contract.

I'm sure he wants to play in the Premier league. But I think he understands that it's rare to be in the position that he is in at the club. I think he'd be open to us making a reasonable offer to him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
The out of control comment to me always seems daft. It's always in the control of club and player but they defer to agent to get them the best deal, which they will be doing

The best deal for chuba, realistically, will be to leave on a free. He would get a much bigger sign on bonus, and probably higher wages. I'm sure his agent will steer him towards that because then we are over a bigger barrel.

The risk to him is if he is injured or doesn't hit form, he may be seen as a one season wonder and interest evaporates. I don't think that will happen but it's a factor.

Either way for us to keep him beyond this year is likely going to be expensive, but it's his livelihood so it's his right to negotiate as best as he can get

Every time I've left a job I've said I'd love to stay but I couldn't turn down an opportunity. A lot of times that was true but a lot of times it was just platitudes. I'd take anything anyone says about the situation with a huge pinch of salt unless it's a picture of him signing a new contract alongside Carrick.

I think at his age he'll want the big move, signed and secured, and being in the limelight in the Prem is a big draw too

We would have let him go for free a short time ago for the simple reason hes not that good a footballer. Now we are getting played like a fiddle. Sign or go. Id take 5m.

Gyorkes and Stewart are different class.

Stunning.
Top scorer in the Championship and Player of the Season in the league.
Our top scorer for over 50 years.
His link up play is perhaps even more impressive than his goal tally.
He has a bond with the fans we haven't seen for years.

Gyokeres is a superb player and we should have signed him last summer - obviously.
Stewart is not in either player's class - and by a very long way.

I still can't believe you posted that tripe.

Wow. What have I just read. Did you watch last season? Get to any games? Clearly not.

I wonder if, and this is just a guess, PAOK have a significant entitlement to a sell on % and this is the reason why none of the supposed bids have met our valuation?

That scenario would certainly complicate matters. 1. We can't get a true market value and 2. We can't afford to give Chuba the contract he feels he deserves.

Impasse.

I don’t know why people are making out it’s all cloak and dagger. From Chiba’s point of view he’s happy to stay and doesn’t want to bankrupt the club to do so, however if say Crystal Palace came in for him I’m sure, and who could blame him, he would jump at the chance.
From Boro’s perspective, he’s got a year left on his contract and even if he has another fantastic season the fact is we need more players than just Chuba, and unfortunately the only way to get those players is to wait and see if we get a good offer for Chuba.

Yeah but cashing in gives no guarantees of achieving the same productivity, irrespective of how many players you bring in. That's my concern. We've not exactly got a long history of wise spending (not saying your assessment is wrong btw)

Probably this comes under "reading too much into it" but nowhere does he mention that he'd love to sign a new contract.

I wonder if his preferred option is to run his contract down and see what happens. Hence he would "love to stay" (for at least another year) but it would also be out of his hands a bit as the club would be entitled to try and sell him? 🤷🏼‍♂️

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he fancied another crack at it with us under Carrick, but also doesn't want to end up stuck here, or reduce his potential earning power, if we don't go up (and/or heaven forbid, Carrick leaves).
