Central Middlesbrough & Parliament Road

The Westminster closed not too long after Boro left Ayresome Park. It has to be said though there is a constant supply of vans to all the many shops up and down Parliament Road. I am not going to say anything against the testimony of the shop keepers inyerviewed, as they know far better than me but there are no empty shop units. By day it is still a busy shopping street.

I'll be down there shopping tomorrow. Pickles are running low so a trip to the Polish shop is needed. Pop into Catch of the Day to see what's in then a couple of samosas from Yasmin.

There was the Samuelsons Workingmans club, or the Sammy’s as it was known, right at the bottom of Parliament Road. Last time I was there was about 2011 for an 18th. Looks like it’s bordered up now.

I don't think the argument is that Middlesbrough centre is worse than other large town/city centres. We all know places have their rough parts and nice parts.

Middlesbrough's issue is that the police don't seem interested in restoring basic law and order. Families also need to be held responsible too.

What can the police do? They have had their numbers and funding cut time after time. Would expect they just dont have the resources instead of just not being interested

Middlesbrough is no different to most working class towns in the UK governed by underfunded local authorities. Nice parts and estates, shockingly bad parts and estates, tatty unloved town centre. We're no different to anywhere else.

But it's not the same everywhere else. Once you move away from Middlesbrough you can clearly see that other areas are not as run down, not as neglected.

I've lived away from Teesside for a number of years as a teenager. Returned as soon as I could afford to get my own place. I'd have to disagree with your point. Is it as aesthetically pleasing on the eye as major cities or affluent towns.. no. They have city funding and a queue of investors wanting to throw money at them. We're a town being left behind, just the same as Luton, Blackburn, Carlisle, Blackpool, etc. I personally don't think we're any worse than those similar to us in size and stature.

It is.

I can't speak for those places other than Carlisle which I don't think is anywhere near the state of Boro town centre and the Gresham area. Have a look at the crime rates for last year from the places mentioned.

Crime rate per 1,000 people

Middlesbrough 164
Blackpool 146
Carlisle 104
Blackburn 98
Luton 84

It really is grim around there.

Make better use of the resources they currently have. Push for more.

Carlisle is a city. Middlesbrough Centre and Teesside are two very different things.

Enforcement against users is needed as deterrence is what you said. Without prohibition you wouldn't need enforcement against users would you?
All I am saying is enforce the laws currently on statute I.e. it is a criminal offence to use hard drugs. They are never enforced in practice and thus you see areas like Parliament Rd rattling with crackheads and criminals stealing to buy crack.

The cause of it all needs to be solved and not just hammer the people that are clearly already in a terrible place.

Exactly the same experience as me mate. It’s sad to go down there now and see some of the old faces who I grew up with having to experience what it’s turned into.

Speak to one of the barbers on Parli Road quite regularly and they can’t wait to retire.
Trying to think of which barbers you mean? The only ones I can think of are run by youngish imigrants who seem to be doing well
