Carrick needs to be careful

Personally I am starting to lose confidence in Carrick. I understand why he believes we are doing the right things because the data around us suggests we are creating chances, also a lot of the goals we are giving away are basically from unforced errors. What that tells me though, is that our attackers are not playing well at the moment. Missing chances and in a lot of cases not even making the keeper work. This is where my real gripe is because at the moment there is nothing coming from Jones, Azaz or Latte Lath (Conway I think has been decent though he should have scored that header yesterday). It is time now to give other players a chance in their positions - yesterday we had Doak, Hamilton, Bergzorg and McGree on the bench and though I don’t personally advocate for this we have the option to stick Barlaser in there and move Hackney forwards - apparently Forss is back in light training too and obviously Gilbert is out now but could have been caed on previously. From my point of view we at least need to be trying something different and we just don’t.

I didn’t think I’d be saying this after how happy I was when he got his new contract but I honestly wouldn’t be that bothered if we got someone else in

I think some people got a bit carried away with Carrick and what we are now seeing is a come down from that.

He still has it all to prove as far as I’m concerned.

He hasn’t done anything yet.

I think in many ways he's still living off that first season when we finished in the play-offs. Looking back at it now, did we simply have better players that season? Is it that teams have worked out how to play against us now and in reality Carrick is as one dimensional as Wilder? Is it a combination of both of those things?

I'm still behind Carrick and I hope we will click soon but if we don't win any of our next few games I can see questions being asked.

We definitely had better players then.

Akpom was miles better than Azaz
Archer was better than Lath
Giles was miles better than every LB at the club
Ramsey was miles better than Burgzorg.

There's probably not many areas of the pitch we've strengthened but we've definitely weakened areas.

Maybe the keeper is better? Dieng better than Steffen?

Have we improved any other positions since then? Maybe CB.

The front 4 is nowhere near the quality though.

I reckon we are better in central midfield now.

Morris better than the Howson from 2 years ago?
Jury's out on that for me.

Morris looks a good player. Athletic, physical. Seems to to do the basics well. Howson was equally as good 2 years ago from what I've seen so far. Not much in it

Definitely agree that Akpom was miles better than Azaz.
Archer was better than Lath although we know how good Lath can be despite his poor start to the season. I still worry that the Ipswich saga has messed with his head.
Giles was better than any LB we have now and I feel we should have spent the money and signed him last summer.
Ramsey was miles better than Burgzorg but I don't think there was much in it between him and McGree. Just a shame McGree is so injury prone.
I think Doak will prove to be an upgrade on Jones and Forss.

Not much in it between Dieng and Steffen for me. I thought Steffen was underrated by some.

I'd say VDB and Clarke are an upgrade on Fry/Lenihan/McNair.

No, Howson was better than Morris is and Hackney is himself.

The contrast between Akpom and Azaz is extreme.
Archer, Ramsey and Giles were so much better than the current options.

Hackney is a much better player than he was 2 years ago though.

We still have Howson (though he is injured) and he probably hasn’t gotten much worse in those 2 years.

Morris I think is a really good player.

I would say that makes us stronger in that area.

Ramsey was miles better than McGree which is why he played. Both are very injury prone.
Forss was better than Jones which is why he played then. Let’s see with Doak.
No upgrade or downgrade at CB, just more options.

So that is basically aaying because Hackney is the same person he hasn’t improved in 2 years. He clearly has, he is a much more polished player these days for me.

Can't agree that Ramsey was miles better. He was more effective in terms of scoring goals but at times a lot of our good play went through McGree that season.

The way we started yesterday with the defenders keeping the ball at the back
Foot on top of the ball was awful
The message that sent out did not enthuse me at all.
I agree. They were clearly trying to draw the press and looked confused when that didn’t come. Effectively make the whole tactic of playing it out absolutley useless if there is no press to play through.

Completely played into their hands.

Reading through this thread on the Mackem's board just highlights how stupid it was.

Ramsey when fit was electric and a massive loss when he got injured…and McGree came back in.

Ramsey was absolutely superb. It’s tragic what has happened to his career since he got injured for us. I think if he had stayed fit we would have got promoted through the play offs. The goals tailed off after he got injured too.

He was a good player for us that season but so was McGree. We were third in the Championship when Ramsey signed and McGree had played in near enough every game up until that point and been a big player for us.
