Can we keep Hackney?

Some reports from s***y tabloid sites suggesting some Premier League clubs are gonna test Boros resolve in January to keep him. His contract runs out 2027.

Can we keep him?

I really hope regardless what happens that he stays till the end of the season to see if we go up or not.

I'd be staggered if we let him leave in January. It would take silly money really to tempt us to sell mid-season, I'm thinking c.£25m or more.

We may sell him next summer for less than that, however if he continues to improve I reckon we could get even more. Of course, that assumes we do not get promoted which I'm not ruling out!

Well he will leave at some point unless we are promoted. We have to accept this is what we do with homegrown saleable assets, if big bids come in. I'm fine with it TBH, the club has to sustain itself somehow if Gibson has effectively maxed out what he can/will plough into it.

Tomlin Tav and chuba. Dreadful deals for the club. Absolutely dreadful.
You're entitled to hold that opinion of course. However, I don't see what Lee Tomlin did after leaving us that indicates Bournemouth had our eyes out. As for Tav and Akpom, it's well documented they were in the last year of their contracts, which always reduces a player's value. More importantly, I don't recall there being any other clubs interested in either so we had a simple choice - take the money on the table or let them leave for free at the end of the season.

You are not alone in using this stick to beat the Boro with, however it's rare that anyone we sell is subsequently sold on for more.

What the player goes on to be sold for in the future doesn't matter really.

It is the players worth to us that I feel is undervalued.

Id be amazed if he isn't playing premiership football next season. We need to match his rate of progress to keep him. Like Tav before him, i feel his progress maybe more rapid than the clubs

Goes back years, cattermole, Morrison.

Chuba and tav more recently. Traore but that was the low fee release we negotiated on the purchase.

I can only think of Spence where we have received more than the player's worth?

So you’re saying that the club is so bad at negotiating sales, that the only person they’ve been able to out manoeuvre is Daniel Levy?

Any player is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay. That is their market value.

Cattermole is certainly an example of a player who subsequently moved for more money, but even then he only went for £6m a year after we sold him for £3.5m. Morrison I agree with and West Brom got a great deal there, whilst we failed to benefit from a sell on clause as he never moved.

The two above are more than 15 years ago. More recently, it seems only Bournemouth and Ajax were interested in Tav and Akpom and as already stated, it was take the money or keep them and lose them for nothing.

You've answered your own question on Traore, but lets not also forget that nobody tried to sign him from Wolves and he eventually left on a free this summer. Despite a loan at Barcelona - the best he could do this summer was sign for Fulham. So basically the most money he ever went for was when we sold him. I'd say that qualifies as maximising value!

with Hackney we have to start with a much higher asking price.. he has a long deal and the sky is the limit for the lad. it's funny because Maddo said that earlier in the season and large section of the fanbase attacked him for it.
