Can we keep Hackney?

McGree potentially if he can get some consistency. Also contract expires in 2025 I think.

I wouldn't want to lose him either, but if he doesn't sign a renewal he'll be up for sale and it may allow us to hold onto Hackney for another year.

There's no way we should be actively looking to sell Hackney in the next 18 months, but if a stupid offer comes in might be hard to turn down.
What do you do if Hackney comes knocking on the door in the summer saying he wants a PL move?

Sell him. Once a player has ideas to leave best to get shot.
Exactly. This is my point. Although not sure I'd phrase it like that. It's all well and good saying we should keep him for a minimum of 18 months but if opportunities are there, who are Middlesbrough Football Club to stand in a players way for career progression. It might be that Hayden is so happy at Boro that he would rather stay, but it also might be the case where he wants to progress his career in the PL and in that scenario we as fans should support that.

That doesn't mean we give him away, obviously his valuation would need to be met and I'm sure Hackney would understand that, Similar to Jack Clarke at Sunderland

What's great aswell is Hackney doing so well coming from our own academy, is that its a message to every single academy player and every single youth kid with great potential, that if you're good enough, you will play in the first team, you will get a chance, we're gonna have young kids with amazing talent breaking the doors down to play for Boro.

Depends doesn't it?

You have a discussion with him. You talk to him like an adult.

You tell him if a club meets a certain valuation we won't stand in his way. Otherwise we want him for another year after which we'll work with him to find the best move possible. You tell him how important he is to the team and that Carrick will help take his game up a level. Something along those lines.

Most players are pros who'll accept it. Might not be happy about it, but it's in their own interests to knuckle down and perform. You only hear about the ones who throw their toys out the pram because that's what generates headlines. Rarely does their career any good though.

100% you bring him to the table and tell him all the positives of staying with Boro and try and convince him to stay. That goes without saying. But if he still wants to leave and a club meets his valuation, then I don't think it's right to keep him at the club.

Jack Clarke was desperate to leave Sunderland this summer, they kept him despite that, and he's one of the best performers in the Championship this season.

I doubt Hackney is going to be desperate to leave.

Nobody met their valuation. It was reported that Sunderland would have accepted £15mil but the highest offer they received was £8mil....

Hackney would go for substantially more than that wouldn't he?
No we are at the stage in his career where people are still raving about him, the cattermole is better than Gerrard phase. Any transfer fees talked about at this stage are highly inflated. We will soon enter the I'd drive him there myself phase. In fact it looked like that was immenant just two short weeks ago. The reality is always 10 to 12 million plus add ons.

Did Clarke submit a formal transfer request? I'd think there was more he could have done if he was desperate to leave.

You're entitled to hold that opinion of course. However, I don't see what Lee Tomlin did after leaving us that indicates Bournemouth had our eyes out. As for Tav and Akpom, it's well documented they were in the last year of their contracts, which always reduces a player's value. More importantly, I don't recall there being any other clubs interested in either so we had a simple choice - take the money on the table or let them leave for free at the end of the season.

You are not alone in using this stick to beat the Boro with, however it's rare that anyone we sell is subsequently sold on for more.
Absolutely spot on. The suggestion that we sell players at undervalue compared to other clubs is ridiculous.

We can only get what others will pay. If your asset value is decreasing because your bargaining position is decreasing then you may not get what the player is worth.

The Spence transfer saga must have made it clear we don’t give in easily, in fact I thought our resolve was going to cost us the actual sale in that case. How many other clubs have taken legal action like we did over the Ziege transfer to Liverpool?
