Bumping Up Old Threads

I look forward to the day Paddy McNair turns into prime Sergio Ramos and makes my thread slagging him look very silly. I hope he does too.
If he turned into Sergio Ramos I'd probably stick the boot into him even harder.

Well i don't think Rob has just got up and thought here's an idea we could block old threads. It's been done to hide and protect someone's àrse.
I suggested it in the feedback thread. Nothing insidious behind it.

Interesting that everyone is vehemently against it yet when someone goes around bumping a load everyone kicks off about it 😂

It's very rare that it adds to the discussion - smoggle's update above is probably one of the few examples I can actually think of and that could have been done with a link.

It's quite often i start reading a thread and think the views or comments are very stagings and then I realise it's from January 2020 and someone has bumped it because someone had a different opinion back then and they want to show that they were right.

If you really want to provide an update it's still quite easy to do and easy to put a link in to an original thread. Threads can still be found by searching, but you don't end up with those situations where because of wilder, pulis, Traore, monk, Spence, braithwaite, assombamonga etc, someone goes round and dredges up 6 threads and puts grinning emojis in to bump them.

It doesn't block the old threads from being read, so doesn't cover anyone's backside - it would all be available on the WayBackMachine anyway. Just prevents them from being bumped back to the top so easily and because you have to wait a little time between posting threads, discourages trying to make several new ones to say "told you so". It did happen on the old forum but far less than it does here because the search engine, even with google, was much harder to use

If it's interesting to read through the replies back then; that is still possible to do by linking to the thread. That ability isn't lost but it's then immediately obvious that it's a callback because you're following a link to that thread.

Another good option would be to have an archive sub forum where any thread with no replies for over 3 months goes to and that way it wouldn't matter if they got bumped as won't be in the main forum and you'd expect older threads to be in there.

There’s often a lot of recurring none football related subjects on here like New York Advice, Best Sunday Lunch and Best place for a Parmo. Surely it’s better to keep the ability to comment on old threads as it contributes to a vibrant and active message board. We’ll just have to hope that people can be trusted not to bump threads to make others look foolish.

I agree with all of this. On another board I go on there's a thread which was started over 12 years ago. The person who started it is no longer with us but the subject remains relevant and it still gets added to from time to time but it can be several months between entries. There's a great thread about covid on here which was started by bear66 and is the natural place to put anything new about the virus. I wouldn't want to go looking for it and find it closed.

Keep it as it is, in my opinion.

As stated above lots of none football-related threads are full of advice and information. There's a huge value to that. Also, what we have currently naturally creates an archive that adds to the rich history of the board.

We've probably all posted things that didn't age particularly well. No harm in having a bit of fun poked at any of us.

If there was any persistent trolling there are other ways of dealing with that.

There's lot of other site improvements that could be made before something like this was added.

Simple ones like adding the page numbers to the top of the page as well as the bottom. Letting people know they are on 'naughty step' rather than slyly putting someone on it without any communication. The complaints about adverts. Adding an ignore topic button to remove the threads you aren't interested in.

You'd be better off asking for site feedback of what the majority would change for a better experience than going forward with this suggestion. Instead of acting on someone's proposal because they got a bit upset that something they previously said has come back to haunt them. You shouldn't say something online unless you're prepared to stand by it later. It's basically public record. And if you're that upset - you can always go back and edit your post.

I'd go even further than niche things like that kept to one thread but I know that would never happen, you have 10 threads started after every match that are all about the same thing when they could be kept to 1 thread.

You look on the Sunderland board and they have single threads for a lot of players, one of their academy players has a 166 page thread about him that started in July. I find that a lot cleaner to look at and better to find information when it's all in one thread. Like I said I know that'll never happen here but at the very least hoofing/bumping threads should be allowed. I'm sure there are a few loons bumping threads to be cheeky about it but most of the time it's genuine.

On Friday I mentioned that Rob gives Andy Preston a platform on here.. spamming the board with Pro Preston Propaganda would perhaps be a more accurate description. That thread was locked and now we have this..

I’m not saying the two are connected.. but they might be. Obviously Rob and Andy are connected.. I mean the post and now the suggestion of banning posts from being bumped, and locking posts etc etc

The suggestion came from someone else. See the Feedback on new site sticky.
