Can you not just.. ignore a thread?

Yes. Just as in the same fashion you could elect not to use an 'ignore thread' option.

It's not a biggie, but I would appreciate that option and it would have zero impact on those that don't want to use it.

I don't think it's annoying by and large and the problem with software like that is that it might prevent someone finding an old thread with value that becomes pertinent again ... maybe about an illness or a charitable project for instance.

An archive of sorts though on a separate part of the forum would be a good idea mind.
