Boxing Day Attendance

Surely the amount of segregation can be cut down? Ours appears massive in comparison to other clubs! Afterall it’s Wigan - not Millwall!!!!

The level of segregation has been ridiculous for a while.
Just compare it to spurs v arsenal, even Rangers v Celtic.
There was negligible segregation at big Riverside games 20 years ago!

Worth noting the capacity of the Riverside is actually around the 32k mark now following the installation of the big screen and studios in the south east and the ‘new’ press box/tv gantry at the back of the east stand.

I’m pretty sure our capacity has been confirmed at over 34k after those works were done. The segregation is the big reducer, not only having a big empty section, but having to segregate both sides of the away fans, which we didn’t have to do when they were on the south.

I'm guessing if we were regularly hitting 30k then the segregation would be changed either generally or on a game by game basis. It's boxing day, so Wigan will probably bring more than what they normally would but maybe still not enough to fill the entire away section .. so you could maybe get an extra 1000 Boro fans in round to and under the big screen without worrying about opposition fans being within 50 feet of each other.

I think there's other hurdles in reducing the segregation.

It affects the fire risk assessments etc.
Potentially requirements for additional stewarding?
How does the segregation in the concourse work if you reduce it in the stand?

If we were going to hit these attendances regularly, I'm sure it would be worth looking at reducing the segregation but I'm guessing for a one off, it's not worth it.

No it was 35 000 pre the works it is as Humpty says now just over 32k.

Can’t agree at all. Other clubs manage. If we were making a load of money then a one off game might not be worth it. However it could potentially bring in a couple of thousand that could amount to £50-£60000. Surely worth making the effort!?

Getting as many fans as possible into the Riverside should be a key objective for MFC.
New fans have to start somewhere.
It is worth it, though it may need some thought/effort.

What is the current layout like in the concourse for the segregation between home and away fans? I never sit in that part of the ground,

They have to be kept 50ft apart because of the numpties that insist on winding up the away section everytime boro score a goal.

When the away fans were in the south stand when the stadium 1st opened segregation was kept to a minimum and was only needed on 1 side given the layout of the stadium.

To be fair there are numpties all over the country but they don't all need a 50 foot gap!

Less segregation would require more stewarding. No idea how many but lets just say 20 additional to martial the two divides.

Where do you get an additional 20 trained stewards from for one match? Or do you carry them all season so you can reduce the segregation for one match?

Do you now need a police a presence because violence is more likely? What is the cost of that?

Do you need to install additional steel gates in the concourse as the divide? If so, what is the cost of that?

Are the toilets/bars/hot food stalls in the right place to accomodate this? Or do they need to make some alterations there.

Are the emergency exits in the right place once the segreation moves?

Like I say, a lot to consider... maybe some/all of those things have been previously considered and already in place. I'm not sure. But it's not just as easy as moving the netting on the seats. And for an additional £50-£60k as a one off, it might not be worth it.

Let's face it the only risk of disorder comes from the South Stand and 14 year old Boro chavs bouncing up and down on their toes.

£50-£60k not worth it??!! I cannot believe anyone would share such a sentiment- I really can’t

I look back at Rav's debut and there's about 8 seats of segregation. We could do it with less than we have now.

However, since then I feel fan behaviour has deteriorated. There has been an increase in the number of fans charging across to visiting fans goading them when we score. The away fans do it too, and who started it isn't a relevant discussion for anyone over the age of 12.

I do think we'd need additional police/stewarding if we were to reduced segregation, no idea how much it would cost. Fans have part to play too. Why anyone would want to spend time baiting the opposition fans is lost on me. Need to get that sorted out if we want segregation to be reduced.

Most other clubs seem to manage these issues cost effectively.
Where there's a will...
