Borges

Never saw him as exellent last night wasnt particularly bad eitherwas very slow getting back to defend one ottack in particular after losing the ball. At the moment no better than engel. I think some on here are getting the , oh hes brazillian so hes very good syndrome

That’s pretty insulting to the intelligence of our fans. People think he’s done well based not on his nationality but on how he’s played. Considering he’s adapting to a new team, club, culture, language, country and style of play, I think he’s done very well, and he’s part of the reason we’ve started to look a lot more solid defensively. We’ve only conceded 2 goals in the 5 games he’s played, and have kept 3 clean sheets.
I think Engel will still be important for us this season, but Borges is a better player for me.
It’s got nothing to do with him just being Brazilian, I mean if we stuck Shakira in at LB no one would be happy would they? 🤔

I’ve just realised she’s Colombian…

I'd agree he's not been as big of an improvement on Engel as we hoped so far but I think we sometimes forget or underestimate how long it can take to settle at a new club and even more so in a new country or league.
He hasn’t had a an Engel Stoke/Sheff we’d shocker so he’s an improvement

He's been far more solid then Engel. He'd only been with us for a couple of days before his Cardiff debut and didn't put a foot wrong. He's played well in every other game bar Sunderland. I've never seen that level of consistency from Engel, who shows a flash in some games that things have clicked and then gives the ball away and falls apart.

Considering his lack of time at the club I'm very impressed. With an ever changing defence (and I may be wrong) we've only conceded 2 goals in 5 games since he's come in, 3 clean sheets.

To be honest it wasn’t like he had a stinker against Sunderland. He did let Roberts cut in on his left, but there’s no way Roberts scores from there. CBs had to be a bit more alert to the threat of the man they were marking

He's been impressive so far considering he has come from France. Jesus wept. The lad is doing so well and with McGree in front of him - even better....he never looks like he is rushed (like Engel did) or has a gaff in him....
Cue Watford Gaff this saturday 🤦‍♂️

We were never signing Roberto Carlos , he’s done a decent job so far . We don’t need a world beater at left back to help reach our goals . He’s integrated into our team and when we start playing more effective in attack itl take the pressure off our defence

Weird comments on this thread. Borges was our best full back on Tuesday. Ayling fell asleep and dived in a few times leaving us exposed.

I’ll give him some leeway as it’s quite obvious that he’s a little more exposed with having Doak on his side who seems to always be that little bit higher up the pitch.

I like Ayling but he’s had a few dodgy moments this season. Certainly more than Borges, yet I don’t see the same level of scrutiny.

Borges has been solid. He had a few bad moments against Sunderland but all of them did. Is he going to give us the attacking outlet of Giles? Probably not. He looks like he’ll be a better defender though, especially given more time.

Borges hasn't played enough games to rate him yet. Not really made any major gaffs yet or at least one that have led to goals conceded.

Enjoy the football and let's hope he stays consistent.

Ayling can’t half pick a pass though!
Not on tuesday he couldnt, his passing was dreadful. I thought he was a bit poor tbh. Maybe down to not being used to playing with Doak or maybe trying too hard to hit winners.
But you can probably count on one finger the bad games hes had since coming here, top pro.

I think Borges has been steady away, played well most games barring a bit of a shocker at Sunderland (along with most of the team). Seems to not have the license to get forward as much as previous left backs which maybe makes us more solid at the back. Doesnt seem to play many risky/winner type balls into the strikers but he is good with the ball in tight areas and good under pressure.

I think if we can get Engel mentally right we then have 2 good left backs and with Dijksteel looking good again 2 good right backs.

Im not noticing massive mistakes from him or finding myself screaming at him in a way that i did with Engel which is a bonus. I don't think he's that bad really, with VDB/Clarke/Edmundson along side him i think he'll be alright. I think alot of it is whose ahead of him aswell, if they're tracking back and helping out. I don't shudder when i see his name on the teamsheet anyway.

😂 sorry mistyped while talking to someone. I mean some people like Engel so want Borges to fail

This isn't true - I've been very vocal about liking Engel, but that doesn't mean I want Borges to fail. I like Borges in the LB position too.

I've repeatedly criticized the style of play down the left hand side - never the individual player - and that hasn't changed.

Borges suffered the same fate as Engel for 2 of his first 3 games. He was isolated and was caught out of position... fans just didn't notice it because they weren't specifically looking for him to make mistakes like they started to do with Engel every game. Someone (maybe in this thread) posted an average position map of each player which proved the positional cover left vs. right.

Borges has looked very good at LB with McGree in the team as LW. Engel looked very good in a few games last season.

Borges looks worse when the LW doesn't cover his defensive duties.... but hopefully McGree will remain fit for the foreseeable so we don't need to make the comparison anymore.

Similarly, Ayling looked worse against West Brom with Doak - but it's a very difficult position to play when isolated / targeted by the opposition due to lack of cover.

Hadn't you declared Morgan Rogers the next coming of Juninho by the same time period? ;)
