Birmingham vs Wrexham

Better for whom? We’ll have to disagree on this one LPB.
For the people who actually support the club and the fans of the future.

It's a sugar rush, it's a night on the booze, a wild ride. But the crash and the hangover are coming and it'll be the fans who pick up the pieces.

I understand your response, but how the celebs have structured their involvement means that’s highly unlikely.

Playing devil's advocate...
When we ' all of a sudden ' were signing Bryan Robson , the Brazil no 10 .. the. White feather etc
They were sporting celebs
Or the fella with the wonderbra supermodel who's husband was a full back ?

We embraced it all ..

Nobody locally went ... " Well that's not fair is it ? "

Yup, Birmingham are doing exactly what we did with Robbo. We paid Ravanelli an absolute fortune in salary to come down to our level. We also threw a shedload of money around after relegation including £15m on Assombalonga and that went about as well as you could expect.

Birmingham's owners are doing exactly what you should do to maximise your chance of a return: invest when the "stock" is at its lowest level. Get it right and they can do an Ipswich. Get it wrong and, well, they'll make a loss but it'll be a relatively low stakes loss for them.

Wrexham have done something similar from a lower base. Invest in a non-league club at around a league one level. They made the right decisions but let's face it, it's a lot easier to make the right decisions with money behind you.

You might not like the influence of money in football and you might not trust the intentions of the owners but in both cases the owners, club and fans have a shared goal. Reach the promised land then the owners sell up to richer owners, they make money and the club has been a success under them. Pretty sure if an American hedge fund bought out Gibson and invested in the team the same way that Ipswich's owners did, all the people here complaining about Birmingham would be cheering us on.

Pretty much this.

People seem to forget that Boro were one of the first clubs outside of the big 4 or 5 at the time to spend big and try to buy our way into the top echelons of the league. We outbid and outpaid a lot of clubs to bring the players we did here. Short-lived as it was for us, you can trace the beginnings of overspending from so-called smaller clubs back to Gibbo's mid-90's splurge.

He gave us 10 memorable years during that time, culminating with a European Cup final. We all enjoyed it, so we shouldn't really complain/care if other unfashionable clubs are doing what we did and giving their fans a taste of what we had. We paid for it in the end with a rapid cost-cutting exercise (£92 million debt etc), that ended in relegation and the club suffering the tenures of Southgate, Strachan, Monk, Pulis, Woodgate, Warnock, and Wilder in the years that followed. And I don't doubt some of these clubs doing it today will falter too, but football is about memories and all these hollywood owners are doing is giving their clubs' fans a taste of the good times after decades of lower league football.

The irony of our fans having a dig at how much ‘smaller’ clubs spend on players.

Just remember we paid Paul Merson more than Dennis Bergkamp was getting when we were in the championship, before we even start in Rav or Boksic.

I get people not liking the media love in, but the spending thing just makes me laugh

I'm not arsed about their spending, it's the North American circus around them that I find awful.

The Birmingham owner actually requested the EFL allow them to play Monday's match in the USA, he was obviously rejected but he's still banging the drum for it to be allowed and it's part of a worrying trend of American owners pushing for matches to be played over there.

If I was a Wrexham fan, I'd probably be sick of being surrounded by tourists in the stands who've suddenly became "fans" because of a TV show.

Ridiculous comparison.

We were owned then by a local businessman. We are still owned by him. Through thick and thin.

Remember Randy Lerner? He got a Villa tattoo, he was there for the long haul!
