The BBC understands that routine testing was done before migrants moved on to the vessel, moored in Dorset.

But test results showing traces of the bacteria came back only after migrants had moved to the barge.

I don't know why the government didn't buy an old cruise ship instead. It would have been cheaper and bigger and ready to use with little or no modifications. Loads of cruise lines are scrapping old cruise ships that would be suitable for this sort of use.

Because this prison barge was all for show.

It's a play to their ever shrinking base of frothing at the mouth racist loons.

I imagine bringing back capital punishment is getting higher up their list of ideas as the election nears.
 
everybody critisises ,but nobody knows what to do -these people are leaving a safe place France and coming to the uk where we are flummoxed by having to give free board and lodgings to a growing army of young dissatisfied men which the country cannot afford.
can you take one of the boat people into your house and keep them fed and water'd and warm and clothed for no charge?

Can you imagine the Gammons if they got on a cruise ship!! I imagine they got the barge as a slave transportation ship wasn’t available

People do know the answer. Take up the offer from France to process asylum applications there. Reduces boats immediately - those who are successful can start work immediately. Those that don’t we will have their details and the lace of origin stored and they can be returned. They won’t do this as it will allow people seeking sanctuary to come here legally. Also France take massively more immigrants than we do - why should we not take our fair share?

Something wrong if legionnaires is there but I can't understand the objections to it in principle. I along with thousands of other British people who have worked abroad and offshore have stayed on these barges. Absolutely nothing wrong with them or the conditions they are being asked to live in. Can't see at all what all the fuss is about. If it's good enough for Brits working offshore and otherwise then why the outcry about refugees?
 
The thing is the government have closed every avenue of claiming asylum other than actually reaching our shores. The same government are then starting a ‘stop the boats’ campaign when it is entirely of their own making. In the past you could have claimed asylum in the UK even if you were in another country. What did they expect to happen
