Bhoycotting the Werld Cup?

FWIW, I'll be watching England games and that's it. For all the same reasons as mentioned already, this doesn't remotely feel like a World Cup.

Watching it as I normally would, to me, validates FIFA and their decision to award it to Qatar and that's not something I personally want to do.
Love the picture. Inside sleeve of MFTJG. My favourite album.

There was a lot of controversy about it being in Russia.

Not sure where you were at the time to miss it.

It was actually a huge surprise that there was very little trouble at the 2018 World Cup.
Ok, it was an exaggeration to say nobody cared, but the opposition towards it was tiny compared to the outcry over Qatar. Despite the fact that Russias human rights violations made anything the state of Qatar has done pale into insignificance.
Unfortunately a large percentage of the world has regressive attitudes, but if we only hold major sporting events in places who think just like us, then we create more divisions.

This World Cup feels so wrong.. corruption, the disgusting treatment of migrant workers, criminalisation of homosexuality, woman’s rights.

But then when it starts it will be everywhere and it’s only gonna take a few tinkles on the blower to get me out for a few beers.. the curiosity will get me and the apathy of ‘what difference am I going to make’

Bhoycott?
Even before the appalling humanitarian issues, there's the corruption involved (again) in Qatar securing their bid.

For me the host nation(s) should already have a football footprint, or failing that, a big enough population to support it by people attending. Qatar had neither.

I get the attraction of having it in the middle east, but apart from that everything else turns me off.

Wring your hands all you like. Won’t change out.

I’m not so sure, to be honest. The whole money making side of the tournament is presumably based on ad revenue, because of the massive global audience.
If 100s of 1000s or even millions of people in each country who normally would watch, just don’t bother this time, that sends a message, even if it’s nothing more than highlighting that the number of people seeing the advertising hoardings, tv ads etc is massively down. That in itself is a story, and presumably would change the amount the organisers can charge for ad space/time next tournament.
Individuals not watching may seem futile, but 10s of millions of individuals not watching is quite a big deal to the money men, I reckon.

I think we’ve rattled them.
At least there’s finally a bit of equality for us gays and you straight boys can’t kiss or hold hands either.

“Mr Bin Abdulrahman al Thani said that public displays of affection are banned between all people - not just same-sex couples” - fans celebrating their teams goals.. PRISON!

The media spend an awful lot of time telling us homophobia and misogyny is wrong, and rightly so of course, not to mention the terrible human rights issues going on over there, but as we all know money is god so it’s ok to overlook all those horrors as long as the right people are lining their pockets. Utterly utterly corrupt world we live in - i wonder how those that are covering these matches are going to skirt round all those issues without appearing complete hypocrites

I’ve no interest whatsoever in this World Cup and I have watched many, never missed one. The hypocrisy of Lineker and Neville is on another level. Taking the moral high ground and pontificating, virtue signalling whilst taking all the money they can get. Ian Hislop showed Neville up for what he really is on HIGNFY. Beckham is another one, glad to take the millions whilst preaching to the world about the human rights abuses.

The excitement is no longer there. The whole event is about money money money.

I've never had a less world Cup 'buzz'. I've almost zero interest in it and already counting down to the league starting again (even though it ain't finished).

The human rights issues / venues / strict drinking laws / interrupting the domestic season. Just doesn't seem like the festival of football it's meant to be.

Yet I fully agree. I read that Kane is going to wear a rainbow armband. Absolutely pointless. If he or more so the England team feel so strongly then they FA should have pulled them out months ago. That's a 'statement'

The funny thing is that I genuinely believe other countries would have followed. Imagine 5-6 of the top nations saying years ago 'we won't attend if we qualify'. The tournament would never have taken place and would almost definitely have been moved. This was announced before the WC in Russia. So countries have had years to 'make a statement'.

Oh and knowing what we know about Russia now. Couldn't have picked 2 worse places 😕

Some really stupid and depressing views on here did someone really say it's western cultural thing not to persecute torture and incarcerate homosexuals with the excuse it's a religious stance . Sports washing not working of course it bloody is psg Man city Newcastle do you really hear any criticism when theres a premier or champions League game on the box.

Said months ago all this taking the knee is utted b#**#*@s, when a massive statement could have said so so much has been missed

Imagine if Gareth Southgate & Harry Kane stood by their convictions instead of going to the corrupt world cup, wearing a pathetic armband, taking the keee, saying this & that, empty words & gestures

Because players, managers, fans & support it etc who take the knee are total hypercrits who, lets be honest here, dont want to miss out on the show business, money, fame, viewing etc, double standards, people will happily switch on the TV & watch the WC because at the end of the day, they have to watch it & anyway, its only a football match & they're not missing it for the world

I said back in August I have no intetest in the WC & apart from news showing snippets of games I will not be watching any of it
