Not one of them can be mentioned in the same breath as the SRs, Joy Division or the smiths I’m afraid. Kaiser chiefs ffs🤣🤣

I think they have, to an extent, but few have caught the zeitgeist in the same way as the Manchester bands. They do have a knack for laying the foundations of emerging scenes.

Leeds had a pretty strong post-punk scene (Gang of Four etc) but not much else. Ditto Birmingham with Swell Maps and a few others. Obviously Ska has its roots in the West Mids and I believe it's a big player in the metal scene?

As for my hometown of Sheffield, where would we be without the new romantics? :) Some "boys with guitars" stuff recently as well but only the Arctic Monkeys who burst through at a national level really. Apologies in advance to any Millburn fans out there.

Human League and ABC would dispute that. Granted they are no longer at the peak they once were but both had big sellying albums at one time.

I love Milburn by the way. Possibly more so than A.Ms cetainly more so than there later stuff. Saw The Rentons at Stockton Calling they are very similar to Milburn.

Nowt wrong with Northside, moody places and rising star are class😊 Seen them at the town hall they were mint. Same goes for some of the other lesser known bands, Paris angels, world of twist, new fads and the high spring to mind.

Read my post again. "I would say Gang of Four - Entertainment, The Wedding Present - George Best(and others) and Girls At Our Best - Pleasure are as good as anything done in Manchester." Thats my opinion of course. Its based on the fact I play those three albums more than any of the Manchester bands with possibly the exception of The Buzzcocks or Joy Division. I knew you would pick up on Kaiser Chiefs being on list but they were from Leeds and you dont have to like every band from a particular town or city. I would say that their first album has more merit than the second Roses album. I don't have the K.C but still have the Roses second.
You spent 20 years asking me who was the best band Roses or Clash and then somewhere along the like you got to Joy Division but you still wont give anything new a chance. Thats me off this post now. I have said my thoughts. Discuss further next time I see you.

I actually think that on it’s own the second coming is a good album, a steady 7/10. It’s obvious problem is it’s always compared to the debut which obviously it’s not in the same league as. If they hadn’t gone through all the legal and management problems which made them lazy I often wonder how big they could have been 🤔

https://www.mdmarchive.co.uk/ is a great resource for fans of Manc music scene. There's only 1 'best' so it has to be the Stone Roses eponymous debut but if only they'd got it together it would have been the Naughties 1st album.

Obviously his album, featuring such lyrical genius as " Come on you reds, come on you reds
Just keep your bottle and use your heads
For ninety minutes we'll let them know
Who's Man United, here we go".

Yep, Millburn were before my time in Sheffield but have definitely gone down in local folklore. I think they're generally recognised as pre-dating the Monkeys (just) and that their style had a big bearing on Alex Turner's formative tunes.
