I’ve just been looking at pre Beeching railway maps. It’s funny how my Friday nights have changed over the years. Although there may have been a need to economise but It seems so severe. , I once read somewhere that he had a vested interest in road haulage. I’m not sure whether that’s true

Does anyone remember the spray paint on the rail bridge in Normanby which read 'Balls to Beacham.'
this is amazing! as soon as I saw the OP, that's what came into my mind.

It was there forever. Its presence should have assured a preservation order on the bridge!

but wasn't it "Balls to Beeching"? Or had someone got his name wrong?

I know the guy who wrote it well and he was well got in the Normanby/South Bank area. He captaine Yorkshire at bowls but writing that was always his claim to fame. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

The often overlooked but saddest part is the amount of Navigators who died building them lines, tunnels and bridges that just went to waste. In real terms not really that long before the lines closed! I think it averaged about 3 deaths per mile of track laid and more for tunnels and bridges!
*I was reading about Navvies after listening to the song Building up and tearing England down and obviously the pogues song Navigator a few weeks ago*

I’m beginning to think you were a phantom graffiti artist back in the day, you seem to recall all the locations of what was sprayed and where norm, not quite Banksy, more of a Warhol ….. ( bloomin corrective text ) 😉 😁 🤣

Interesting cove, your Ernest Marples. The original Tory bad egg - corrupt, amoral, eventually scarpering to Monaco to escape the fallout of 30 years' unpaid tax.

Would barely move the needle on the repulsive-o-meter these days.

The only time I ever did it was spraying a boot and B,B,B, near Eston Baths. I ended up with paint on my hands and good hiding from my dad.

Just looked on his Wiki as I remembered him being in the Profumo drama a few years ago. A real trailblazer for the current lot with his business interests.
