Barlaser

There was a bit of play in the first half where he side stepped their whole midfield with a few nice touches. He does look quality when he does that. He stays in the team for a huge game on Tuesday.

The lad is a real player.
I think he's naturally unselfish ... he works in the service of the team, which is probably why he is shot shy. I think I read that he scored a few for Rotherham, so mybe he just needs a nudge from Carrick ..."Have a go Dan".
If he reads this board, he'll probably be a bit wary of shooting and missing.

It's nice to see him being appreciated.

He’s been terrible since we signed him but has been one of our best players while Hackney has been out. Very much changed my mind about him, especially like him when he sits deep, seems to give him a roll that he thrives in and is losing the ball less! Would like to see him have a shot when he is in the position he gets in regularly on the edge of the opposition box. Great turnaround!

More than held his own tonight, if he can add a few goals to his game he will be some midfielder for us!!
That'd need him to take a shot.

I like him, and tonight he showed more defensively than we've seen previously, but he really needs to be a bit more selfish at the top end

He was/ is technically exceptional..
His short range passing , and weight of pass
, and movement, to create space in our back 1/3rd was sublime at times.
I can see why he gets tired quicker, he is involved in every second of play , dictating or moving.

He could of played for them tonight if he'd had neck tattoos and a funkier haircut , and no one would of noticed the difference
( Other than their keeper , who'd have had an outlet first half )

if he can add a few goals to his game

Or even literally one goal. Which will be difficult considering he doesn't ever shoot. But the other parts of his game are starting to come together nicely, for sure.

Is it just my biased perception, or do we have a habit of signing goalscoring midfielders with plenty of previous long-range blockbusters in their highlights reel, and shaping them into players who'll never take a shot at goal? I'm thinking Howson and Nicky Bailey for starters.

I think premier league supporters would be genuinely surprised at the level of skill shown by us today. We played out from the back superbly under pressure. The contrast with Sunderland was night and day

Has an eye for a pass that’s for sure - but still makes a few costly errors which lets his game down a little, although not against Villa pleasingly. Handy player to have at our disposal - think he might spend more time as a sub when everyone is back available though

He literally needs some sort of therapy for this affliction. Pull the f***ing trigger son!

Really like him though, Rolls Royce type player, like MC himslef was.

This.

And yesterday laid to rest the idea (posted by several of Barlaser's detractors on here) that he would be benched as soon as Hackney came back.
He is clearly key to the way Carrick wants us to play. That's not to say that he'll play every game.
I do think there will be rotation, and the way the opposition play will be part of that.
Barlaser and Howson are the two players who can sit deep ... Hackney and Obrien will likely play a little more forward.

Anyway, fantastic to see Hackney and Barlaser passing their way around and through a premier league midfield yesterday.
