Are we throwing in the towel?

just felt like the tone and talk and actions of the club were feeling a bit like that.. then they let Matt Crooks b***r off!
I wasn't actually referring to you. More to the poster who said we definately won't make the playoffs.

Your op just made you sound a bit drunk mate.

I've said it all season (and last season) that we have a massive gulf in star quality in our squad. Last season it was mostly provided by the loan players and Akpom. We have very few players that a team like Leicester/Southampton/Leeds would have in their starting 11s. We have quantity which is why our season hasn't been so terrible with all the injuries. Our 1st and 2nd string are roughly equal in ability. Our 2nd string is definitely good enough for a promotion push to fill in gaps where needed but our 1st 11 is not.

We either need some of these development players to make Hackney/Akpom like improvement jumps in quality or we need to find some stars when we recruit this summer. We can't have 11 star players in our team, we could never afford that but the players we have are good enough if you add a bit of quality in and around them. It might only be 3 players needed. Basically an Archer, Akpom and younger version of Howson added to the team might be enough.
I agree but the only problem is if we develop any of them into high quality players, it feels like we will just sell them when a premier team makes a bid, so kind think we would be better with players not quite good enough for the premiership which sounds like madness reading it back

Kieron Scott talking about target.. how the championship might be easier next year.. having to replace Rogers.

Jonny Howson looking for a new contract and Matt Crooks rumoured to be off to Real Salt Lake City.

Talk of Sam Greenwood signing for £1.5m was quickly out to bed.. not as simple as it seems and probably not happening if Leeds go up.

Did THAT goal from Sunderland kill our season?

Injuries have been pretty stacked.. but we’ve kept it respectable. If the squad isn’t there to see lip into another gear.. we’re just gonna be treading water.

No new on Paddy McNair.. looks like he’s seeing his contract out. Dijksteel disappears from the squad for months on end.

Year 3: the promotion year.. all hand on deck, clearing the decks, deck the halls..

We’ve been pretty smart financially in the past few transfer windows.. are we gonna have a big investment in the summer?

Do we continue to cut back and do more for less?

Dijksteel
McNair
Howson
Greenwood
Crooks
Hoppe

Doesn’t take long before a spine of a team becomes a full (potential) starting 11

Talk of Gilbert going out on loan, Coburn neatly went to Plymouth in the summer. Coulson is out on loan.. presumably will be looking to move on. O’Brien hasn’t had the best of starts.. but you’d think moving here would suit over anywhere else.

Academy players edging closer to the first team..

Premier league quality for next season.. regardless of where we finish. You thought this summer was hard.. at least we had a template to build off!

Rumours of McGree moving to a big club have been rumbling for a while.. clubs sniffing around Bangura too..

Rip it up and start again?
Not sure about all that Newy, but letting Crooks go when we may need him in our attempt to reach the play offs isn't a big help. Have we chucked the towel in? Yes I think we have, I will enjoy home games regardless as the football we do try to play can be good to watch. I agree I too think there may be a big turn around of playing staff in the summer. The young- un was saying the same, rip it up and start again.

I could just about accept that we didn't bring a striker in this January. Carrick said that we wouldn't be bringing a player in unless we feel certain they're the right fit, and money which wasn't spent in January will hopefully be spent in the summer, when there'll be a wider range of players available, and we'll have more time to identify our targets.

It is stating to feel as though this season is becoming a write-off though. My hope is that having McGree, Jones and Lath all available at the same time will make a huge difference, but it's a waiting game at the moment.

Here's part of what Michael Carrick had to say today in his Media Conference v Bristol City:

How do you see the league table panning out. Will it be like last season going down to the last few games?
Who knows? Who knows, you know? I could sit and say anything right now……part of its guess work and, it's kind of irrelevant really. It's for us to make sure we are in and around it and give u`selves a chance. The only way of doing that is winning games and picking up points. It's normally tight. It normally goes close…..hopefully we can do great and be done by then, but the chances are it will go along [to the end of the season] yeah.

Stirker situation? Kieron Scott mentioned `free agents` this week. Any news?
Yeah. There's always conversations, there's no decision made on anything [right now]. There's always a lot of things come into it. Our eyes are always open. If there's an opportunity, and we think it will improve us, it'll help us or make us better, we will always look at it, and we'll always take it [decision]. It doesn’t change today what the plan was before. Its ongoing. Sometimes things pop up you don’t expect and we'll act upon it.

It's a bit of an odd one. Would be a bit disappointing if the club have known this move was likely to happen for a while, and still chose not to bring in a new face in January, but I also appreciate what Carrick said about them having to be the right fit.

Sounds like the noise surrounding Morgan Rogers inflated the price of whoever we were after..

Someone mentioned £2.5m for a player that was going to be out of contract in the summer.. might have just been guff tho

Callum O'Hare maybe.. I want first dibs on this shout by the way.. ex Aston Villa U23 out of contract in the summer. Nailed on imo

The Greenwood one he has already talked about. If Leeds gets promoted he will get an automatic payrise that would probably price him out of a move to us if we were in the Championship
Hes played his way out in my book by being mediocre. Sort of player you could never get rid of if he signed a lucrative contract. He never looks like he's enjoying playing for us. Get shot

No.

If you take the time to watch all his media conferences / read the transcripts of every game this season, and you will understand he gives similar replies to reporters who repeat the same questions week-in-week-out.

From today's media conference:

US Interest in Matt Crooks?

I can give you the latest. Crooks is gonna travel over to America in the next day or two. It's one of those things…. I said it to Morgan: every situation is different, and we treat it different. For this one, for Matt and his family, it's an opportunity he kind of wanted to explore and, it's too big to turn down. We respected that. It is what it is, you know. At this moment in time, it's not done. Whether it gets done or not, he is travelling over there to have a medical to see what comes of it.

Will Crooks departure limit attacking options?

We’ve got options. We've got really good options. Riley and Sammy coming back around. Manny [Latte Lath] getting fit again in the not too distant future. I think we’ve got good options. Hayden played well as a ten [10] at the weekend. We're flexible across the front line and we're creating chances. We're looking dangerous. I've got a lot of faith in the boys, whoever plays. Listen! It is what it is. We want to be as strong as we can, we want to be as powerful as we can, and we want to be as dangerous as we can. But I do feel with the players we have, we have a good balance.

you didn't seen him whispering Anwar El Ghazi under his breath then?
