Are we throwing in the towel?

Kieron Scott talking about target.. how the championship might be easier next year.. having to replace Rogers.

Jonny Howson looking for a new contract and Matt Crooks rumoured to be off to Real Salt Lake City.

Talk of Sam Greenwood signing for £1.5m was quickly out to bed.. not as simple as it seems and probably not happening if Leeds go up.

Did THAT goal from Sunderland kill our season?

Injuries have been pretty stacked.. but we’ve kept it respectable. If the squad isn’t there to see lip into another gear.. we’re just gonna be treading water.

No new on Paddy McNair.. looks like he’s seeing his contract out. Dijksteel disappears from the squad for months on end.

Year 3: the promotion year.. all hand on deck, clearing the decks, deck the halls..

We’ve been pretty smart financially in the past few transfer windows.. are we gonna have a big investment in the summer?

Do we continue to cut back and do more for less?

Dijksteel
McNair
Howson
Greenwood
Crooks
Hoppe

Doesn’t take long before a spine of a team becomes a full (potential) starting 11

Talk of Gilbert going out on loan, Coburn neatly went to Plymouth in the summer. Coulson is out on loan.. presumably will be looking to move on. O’Brien hasn’t had the best of starts.. but you’d think moving here would suit over anywhere else.

Academy players edging closer to the first team..

Premier league quality for next season.. regardless of where we finish. You thought this summer was hard.. at least we had a template to build off!

Rumours of McGree moving to a big club have been rumbling for a while.. clubs sniffing around Bangura too..

Rip it up and start again?

Definitely not thrown in the towel. Yet being realistic in terms of league opponents and current position.

We had a genuine chance of automatic last season. So we threw everything financially at it with Archer / Ramsey etc. I have no doubt we would have done it again had we been sat 3rd or a few points off the top 2.

Yet the top 2 is pretty much 'done and dusted' between 3 sides. Then the one who fails to make it will be overwhelming favourites to win the playoffs.

I think the league will be 'easier' next season. So you can kinda get where he's coming from. We clearly haven't thrown in the towel. Although if we don't start winning at home we may as well🙄

I would argue that we've already replaced all the players on your list.

No.

Dijksteel - Ayling on loan?
McNair - RVDB
Howson - O’Brien? On loan?
Greenwood - Azaz
Crooks - Coburn? Barlaser?
Hoppe - Latte Lath

I mean.. we haven’t via they’re still in the squad.

The Greenwood one he has already talked about. If Leeds gets promoted he will get an automatic payrise that would probably price him out of a move to us if we were in the Championship

I don't think the towels in, but i definitely think Carrick and the higher ups are planning for another year in the Championship more so than what happens if we got promoted and therefore it's about forming the squad we have into one that can compete by way of who to let go, and who to look into bringing into the club (new signings and u21 promotion) - The squad is too big, too many 'squad' players who i wouldn't feel comfortable playing 75%+ games. Losing a key player for a prolonged period would hurt any team, but if we lost VDB or Hackney, or even the lesser important but still starting XI for months we need to make sure we have resources to solve this, perhaps a change in system to cater if injuries came about. We need to trim the squad and look at quality over quantity and i think there'll be significant investment in the summer as we need to improve the starting XI rather than the squad whilst also continuing the model of youth recruitment ala VDB, Rogers.

MC will already have a list of which first team players currently with the club he hopes are here for next season and who he would hope/allow can move on to free up space/wages/funding for new signings.

Dijksteel - Ayling will be a free agent in the summer, Tommy Smith
McNair - RVDB, Lenihan, Clarke, Fry
Howson - Barlaser
Greenwood - McGree
Crooks - Azaz
Hoppe - Getting a forward in will be a priority.

I don't think Greenwood would have started so many games if McGree had been fit all season. They would have been competing for that position. Greenwood was brilliant in the game against Sunderland but his position is under threat and I don't think he will be here next season.

I think the season has always been seen as a re-set, development season by the club. 12 new players in, the majority under the age of 24 with no or limited experience in the league, don't think it could have been seen any other way. The league is particularly strong this year with the 3 clubs coming down, a few others still in receipt of parachute payments. One thing for sure you can sww just by the last transfer windiow FFP is really starting to bite. Boro are a few seasons in to there restructuring to get in line for FFP and now have plenty of headroom to build, and a squad rapidly rising in value. I think next season, we will be well placed to finish in the Automatic spots, trusting we can keep Carrick in place

We’ve needed a big squad to cope with the injuries.

So we haven’t replaced them..

We will need to bring in top top players this summer to compete.. very difficult to replace some players taken for granted.

Do we stick with u24s when recruiting?

Think it massively depends on the more senior pro's at the club, currently you would say Howson, Smith, Lenihan & Crooks are the 4 senior pro's, possibly Fry but I don't think he show's enough leadership. Howson I think will sign a new one year deal, Smith could well be moved on, 1 yr left on his deal coming back from a bad injury, Lenihan the same, I don't see him getting in the side if RVDB is still here, he won't get in ahead of Fry just on aerial presence alone, Crooks is strongly rumoured with a move away to the U.S. We will have to get some experience in, Ayling fits the bill, but we would need another a couple of 28-30 year olds with 200+ champo games in their legs for me
