Apologies for swearing

Why do the commentators bother with the apology when no-one does anything about it?

If the swearing is a problem then why can't the referees issue a yellow card.

Put the responsibility on the players rather than the TV companies.

The apologies dont bother me. A small price to pay for hearing the swearing. They will never stop it and nor should they. Ever.

But why apologise.

It's either a part of the game and should just be ignored.

Or it's something terrible that needs a public apology at least twice a game.

Just seems strange that 'being drowned out by the crowd' makes something acceptable, that otherwise needs a special bit of attention being drawn to it.

Why don't they apologise for the spitting/snotting in this Covid-conscious time..?

I started listening to daytime R4 and I've been surprised by how much swearing is in programmes, no apology needed and none given

It’s all around us now . Even this morning when I was eating my alphabetti spaghetti on toast I simply conjured up the words ‘ f****** b****** ‘ and other days I’ve spelt ’you w***** ‘ . It’s horrendous 😦

Was watching Lyon V PSG on bt sport and they apologised in case you heard some swearing that was in french.
Took me back to school and looking up swear words in the french dictionary.

Half the time you don't hear it. It's only highlighted because they mention it.

I don't overly have an issue and it's mainly because of no crowds. It's no worse than post watershed TV programs warning you about violence and swearing etc.

Before line of duty last night they said 'containes scenes of violence'. I just thought 'no sh*t'. If someone has a child watching it thinking it won't have violence and swearing then it's on them. I don't need a warning.

We watched ’The Great’ (brilliant btw) and before one episode it said “Warnings of extremely strong language, extreme violence, nudity and sexual activity from the very start”. I said to Mrs Flash ‘sounds great!!’ 😁

I heard Konsa say "what the **** are you doing" last night! Seconds later the commentary made the apologies. I wonder if OFCOM makes the production companies do it.

Reminds me of being a teenage lad watching Channel 4 and the "red triangle" films they used to show .. sit watching a boring film just waiting for the red triangle to appear in the corner .. 30 seconds now .. and "Boobies and other stuff!!!" .. trying to make .. the most .. of the minute or so the red triangle was on screen .... 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

VHS was your friend 😉

It shouldn't be said in polite company
When aged old ladies are drinking their tea
If their pasts were revealed then we'd find, sure as hell
They've not only said it, they've done it as well

A four letter word, a four letter word ....

They can issue yellow cards, and probably should, but don't, or the first one is classed as a warning, a bit like how you get away with a hard early tackle, but the second gets booked.

It still wouldn't stop it though, although may reduce it by 50%, and you would still end up having the "box ticking" apology, it's probably a condition of them being able to do the live broadcast.

The sport does need stronger refs though, and tougher enforcement, there should never be a situation where a protesting player is shouting or swearing at a ref or getting within 2m of them, so the ref has to walk backwards to get away from the protests.

The rules need to be implemented and the FA need to back up the refs. It should be like Rugby or Hockey, zero backchat and just get on with it, makes for a much more flowing game.

Well of course there used to be the rule of moving the free kick forward 10 yards if players complain. What happened to that? I don't think there's any other sport like it for lack of respect towards officials, the whole system needs sorting out top to bottom.

No swearing at the referee, no touching the referee. It's not rocket science is it? Should be drilled into players as kids, just like other sports. Complete respect towards officials should be rigourously enforced. And on the flip side if big mistakes are made by the officials this should be acknowledged publicly and officially and an explanation of what is being done to reduce the chance of it happening again - back to ref school, demoted or whatever.

I always laugh when ex pros or managers say you can't stop players swearing at refs in the heat of the moment or whatever. I'd bet anything a few reds issued at the start of the season and they'd suddenly find they had more self control than they thought.

Exactly, something comes in as a fad, then gets no backup, then disappears. Same with keepers time-wasting, people kicking the ball away, standing in front of the ball so people can't take a quick free-kick etc. Do any of that in Rugby, Hockey or NFL and you're getting strongly penalised and likely sent to the sideline. It just makes the game quicker and better to watch.

All it would take is a few players to be made example of, and persisting with for a season, then it becomes second nature.

We can teach <10 year old kids to respect officials (and the rules/ sport) in any other sport, and they're all as competitive or as fast as football, so there's zero excuse.

Annoys the $hit out of me how much protesting, time-wasting, slowing of the game there is. Swearing is probably the least noticeable on TV, but obviously happens a lot in local sport. Local other sports don't have the same problems though.
