Any whiskey connoisseurs on here?

I like scotch whisky more than Irish or American whiskey, but there are some nice Irish ones. I like a Speyside usually. Lidl do one for 17.99 which is almost identical to a Tamnavulin. Don't mind an Old Pulteney from Wick or even a Jura from the West, which has a touch of peat but not too overwhelming for my delicate palate like in Talisker or Laphroaig.
I've been drinking and enjoying Tamnavulin recently, I'll have to have a look at the Lidl one,

I dabble but prefer Rum. Some of the Japanese Whiskey’s are insanely good, Suntory Toki is very very good for the price.

have to say that Whistlepig Rye is one of my favourites from the American bourbon collection. The aroma of this bourbon is amazing and adds spice to meats, and of course a great evening. Definitely recommended.

Lidl also do a cheap Isley whisky which tastes like it was bottled at Bowmore Distillery . I am a big fan of all the Islay malts and most of the other Whiskies as well. It all stemmed from having a holiday on the Island and visiting the various Distilleries.

A few ago I bought an old flame oak cabinet with leaded glass doors at an auction for £20.00 and spent a couple of days restoring it to a glorious finish. Then decided it would be great to use it as a drinks store to offer guests, so I filled it with 12 decanters (also cheap, from auctions) of different single malts. These range from smokey Islays like Lagavulin (extraordinary) through specialised releases like ’Nector D’Or’ (my personal favourite) and other Speysides, through to more entry level things like Singleton, which I also love. However, and this is a big ‘however’, I have to be really careful with them personally as even a small excess triggers a heart condition I have. So, tempting as it is (and it’s amazingly tempting with them sitting there looking at me every nigh!) I restrict myself to only an occasional and very modest dram. There’s very little I enjoy more than sitting, sharing a glass of something sumptuous with an old friend and talking into the night.

My kids brought me a bottle of Dewars back from holiday a few years ago and that got me hooked. Aberfeldy is my favourite although I look to see what’s on offer in the shops and give it a go. Smokey casks don’t agree with me.

While I love my ales, I do love an occasional single malt.

I was bought a Laphroaig 10 yr old single malt that I very occasionally savour. It is a joy, kept for special occasions, it is also original cask strength at around 60% ABV 👀 Priv above wouldn’t like it though as it is an Islay, smokey whisky.
Too Smokey for me Laphroaig now. Used to enjoy it, but my taste has shifted again.

Initially hated whisky. Learnt to love it. Got more into Smokey types, then shifted back to smoother ones, now hardly drink it at all. It now gives me heartburn, for some reason.

Enjoy it. It’s a pleasure.

I absolutely love it, but appreciate why others do not tbf. Any taste has to be personal, no right or wrong with any taste.

Enjoy all types. If it’s scotch it’s got to be highland park for me or bruichladdich. Bourbon has to be angels envy but if wedge issues a bit tight makers mark. Irish is green spot

Bought a laphroiag as a gift for someone but it was a 16 yr old. Not to my taste. When im in edinburgh i go to a chap who only sells small batches, again as gifts. Johnny walker double black does me, anything else is wasted on me
Where is this chap in Edinburgh? im going there end of this month so would like to bring some home?

Anyone know any other good places in Edinburgh to buy?

Have a try of a Glenkeir Treasure.
They do lots of slight flavour hints, so read the label and you'll find a favourite. I devoured one last year with vanilla and orange hints...

And of course Macallan 10 or 12 or 20 aged or JohnnieWalker Doubleblack if you like 007 !

Tip I also picked up to bring out flavour from a professional taster...
Sip ice cold still water, then have a cocoa bean (bit of chocolate has nearly same effect), then sip your whiskey.

Scotch single malt for me, not a fan of the peaty or smokey whiskies.

Try the Swedish Mackmyra for something a bit different, it’s lovely.

My favourite’drinker’ has to be Glenmorangie though…. I also have a small collection of investments that I’ve tried at various whisky tastings over the years, never to be opened though

I had a mate who was buzzing that when he got married his father in law to be had been saving a 20 year old bottle of whisky for the day for him since she was born so by then it would be a 45 year old bottle. It took me ages to get him r
To realise that it would just be a 25 year old 20 year old bottle of whisky 😂

I prefer bourbon and rum as like sweeter drinks

I'd recommend trying a Japanese whisky tasting set - just google it for suppliers. My niece introduced me to Japanese whisky and I was very impressed by their subtleness and delicacy.

Although I tend to go for the Islay's, one that took me by surprise was Glenmorangie Taghta it was sublime, love Caol Ila, Springbank also.
Currently drinking Uigeadail Corryvreckan at 57% I add water to get it to where I want it and it opens the flavours up beautifully.
Deveron is a little belter too.
