Any whiskey connoisseurs on here?

It’s the strangest thing, I’ve always hated the smell and taste of whiskey, but was at a wedding fairly recently and was given a sup from a flask, and it just suddenly tasted sublime. So much so I’ve been buying myself small sample bottles, and I’m really getting a dangerous affection for the stuff, out of seemingly nowhere. Bought some glencairns and old fashioned glasses, might even treat myself to the old style drinks glove at some point!

Isn’t it just weird what the ageing process (of humans) does to you

While I love my ales, I do love an occasional single malt.

I was bought a Laphroaig 10 yr old single malt that I very occasionally savour. It is a joy, kept for special occasions, it is also original cask strength at around 60% ABV 👀 Priv above wouldn’t like it though as it is an Islay, smokey whisky.

I like the Islay malts too, but my fave is a nice Talisker, not the newish Storm brand though, it's rubbish.

Love a bit myself.

I used to hate the stuff, it at least I thought I did, most likely due to enduring cheap blends as an ignorant youth.

Then someone bought me a bottle of The Dalmore (forget which now) and despite some reservations I was persuaded to try it and I was hooked.

Glenmorangie is my go to favourite, but I've not tried a single malt I didn't like yet.

Yeah I’m not a fan of any of the Laphroig whisky’s, I much prefer a speyside whisky.

I’ve had a bottle of the 10 year old original talisket for about 18 years and still a 1/3rd of it left. My pallet just doesn’t agree with the Peaty Smokey ones.

Love an Islay myself. Occasional sipper but few finer experiences imo.

Got a couple of rare bottles as investments knocking about too but apparently I can't drink them (according to my wife) 😂

Tell us about these ‘investments’ mate?

I like scotch whisky more than Irish or American whiskey, but there are some nice Irish ones. I like a Speyside usually. Lidl do one for 17.99 which is almost identical to a Tamnavulin. Don't mind an Old Pulteney from Wick or even a Jura from the West, which has a touch of peat but not too overwhelming for my delicate palate like in Talisker or Laphroaig.

I've been drinking and enjoying Tamnavulin recently, I'll have to have a look at the Lidl one.

I love a glass (or three) on winter evenings and in my dotage I'm leaning towards irish whiskey. The better half was visiting the Teeling distillery in Dublin in january and brought back a bottle of their Small Batch whiskey. Loved it, a hint of honey, just as I like it and quite affordable - 36 euros in France. I like to drink neat from a liqueur glass in small sips (I know!) but it seems to taste better that way.

Very similar tastes to mine then, I have. A bottle of the double cask tamnavulin, a bottle of the 10 year old Jura and a glen keith open at the moment.

I'm definitely not a connoisseur but I do like a whisky. I've never had anything really aged or expensive but I have a decent collection. I like all the different types whether they are smoky, peaty or sweet like a bourbon etc. Different moods make me go for different whiskies. I always take it neat though.

I'd say the smoky ones are probably my favourites. I like a Laphroaig and I had a Ledaig which was very nice recently. A surprisingly good one is an English single malt called Cotswolds. Partial to an Irish at times as well where I'd go for a Green Spot or a Red Breast.

Bought a laphroiag as a gift for someone but it was a 16 yr old. Not to my taste. When im in edinburgh i go to a chap who only sells small batches, again as gifts. Johnny walker double black does me, anything else is wasted on me
