Anthony Vickers - Over & Out

It’s only as simple and straightforward if you have no concept of context or nuance.

It’s funny how you should say all this, especially after you attacked Pulis “for scraping into the play-offs” when he did it by 3 points, yet you took great offence at any suggestion Karanka scraped into the automatic spots on goal difference.

My criticisms of Karanka were his negativity (after spending £30m on attackers to then play more defensive) and his awful man management.

Two things that ultimately cost him his job.

More deflection and whataboutery.

I don’t recall ever having said that Pulis scrapes in the play offs. What I do remember is congratulating him for doing so.

It has nothing to do with nuance either. You criticised Karanka for the things that you defended Pulis for. You can dress it up and obfuscate all you want but when you boil it down it’s really that simple. The threads are all there on the old board for everyone to see.

Sad that we will all be that bit less well informed from now on all things Boro. Imagine if we have some success this season. Dom Shaw will no doubt report really well but the other Gazette voices could be people with no affinity to our area whatsoever.

Just reading on twitter that after 19 years at the paper, Paul Fraser, Chief Football/Golf Writer is coming to the end of his time at the Northern Echo.

Gazette photographer Katie Lunn is the eighth member of staff to have had her contract ended by the paper. Always a tremendous ambassador for the paper and the area you may well have seen Katie at gigs, sports events and all sorts of places. Very visible on social media as well, Katie has produced so many stunning shots over the years showing off events and landscapes putting us in the picture.
She is off to Uni best, so wishes to another very talented person now making a new path in life.

These are no longer local papers. In truth the decline has been there for a while. Just reading here about Reach PLC, one editor for Nottingham Post, Derby Telegraph, Lincs Echo. A huge patch. No connection with communities.

You probably know this site Rob. Its got all the inside information and media news for UK Television, Radio and News platforms.

Media.UK: https://media.info/uk/newspapers

It appears multi - media are exfoliating journo`s like throwing away sweet wrappers.(n)

Yep - it is all very sad. You don't realise how much you are losing until it happens. As in institutions like the Gazette underpin a community. Important things like births and even more deaths. When my mam died 4 or 5 years ago very few of her friends were aware about her funeral because for people of that age group the Gazette was where they would see notices of that kind. They are not facebook generation. Even for those of us that go with social media we may not choose to include our personal and family life on line and therefore there is a great deal of community life that is threatened or damaged really.

Does the gazette really still underpin the community? Maybe 20 years ago, I’d disagree that it does now with 700,000 people in teeeside and only 12,000 and falling actually buying it...thats one in every sixty people, across all the demographics. Probably skewed towards older ages as I cant imagine it being something the youth are buying, but even then thats not a great spread for getting communications out or being a rock of support for the community.

Well I just read Craig Johns' fascinating article in the Gazette about Robbie Keane and how he's waiting for the 'right opportunity', that 'he's been offered many opportunities and turned them down'.

I especially liked the part in the subtitle when we were informed that Robbie Keane was assistant manager under Woodgate. Pulitzer prize on the way here I think...
