Anthony Vickers - Over & Out

I’m happy to see both of them gone.

I can do without an imaginary propaganda piece of what Steve Gibson must be thinking from PT.

Reading an AV DNA article is like listening to Jazz, self indulgent with no real substance.

The Gazette sport desk hasn’t been fit for purpose for years, much like Boro’s full time recruitment team.

So you would happily have local news covered by non local people who have no affiliation to the club or town. Sometime I shake my head at some of the comments written on here.

How many times?? It’s not about me! I’d rather have some honesty and someone who will ask the right questions. I don’t believe we’ve had that.

The sad thing about this for me is the fact that two people have lost jobs they loved doing and the personal impact that has on themselves and their families.

I, at times used to criticise them, for example, for running stories based on things that were discussed on here first, but I later reflected that by doing so they were actually reporting on issues that Boro fans across the area and beyond were clearly interested in as they had created much debate on threads on here and they offered alternate angles on our own visions and reached a different and wider audience.

I suspect those that currently say that they are no loss, will find that actually, they will prove to be a significant loss. There was always a few stories and reports on the Boro every day. They were free to read, provided topics for discussion on here too, which in turn enables traffic that was good for this boards continued survival. I fear we will now see fewer reports and stories in the gazette, save for MFC press releases or just regurgitated offal from various newsnow platforms. We may see more generic drivel of the type we see in the nationals too.

It is a sad day for local journalism across the country, let alone Teesside and its environs, It will likely be a sad day for Boro fans generally as the amount of stories will probably reduce along with their quality. Whether you agreed or disagreed with them at times, they created talking points, provided updates and reports on all things Boro and occasionally the odd scoop. As the song lyrics say, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot”

I wish them both good luck and wish them both well and hope they are able to move on with their new chapters as positively as possible.

Good post Coluka. What I will say though it must have brilliant for them to have jobs they loved doing for whatever length of time. Many people work all their lives in jobs they hate. At least they didn't. Wish them well for the future but it's sad day day for local journalism and The Gazette. Really fear that this is the beginning of the end of The Gazette. Shaw is ok. Paylor should have stayed retired. He writes same stuff in Gazette and Sunday Sun.

Nowthen has replied to me and said the original comment was mistaken. My comment is therefore superfluous but I will leave it below the line for context.

A silly comment. No one deserves to lose their job, especially one as innocuous as being a football hack on a local paper. Neither are Kelvin Mckenzie FFS

I’ve said that comment was a mistake.
You’d agree Kelvin McKenzie should never work again?

have been thinking of cancelling Gazette for a couple of years, this may make my mind up, will give it a month then decide.

Local papers are the 21st century equivalent of the town crier - they once served a need but they're obsolete. The Gazette is a shadow of its former self. Like all local papers, it's locked in a cycle of decline - online alternatives lead to falling revenues, cost-cutting, a worse product, fewer readers and, eventually, closure. I suspect AV and PT have grabbed the voluntary redundancy terms while they're still on offer.
To an extent, I think this is incorrect. Local media is needed but the finances are not there. I don't believe they are obsolete as such but obviously it is too much work and money. Local councils of all stripes welcome not being scrutinised.

I believe online alternatives are useful if financed and/or have active, enthusiastic contributors. I live in borough of Lambeth and there are many good online resources (SE1; Brixton Buzz/Urban 75). Earlier this week a blogger reported from an online planning committee for over 4 hours! Alas, the kind of area also attracts what kind of coverage it gets. My part of London is very political and with much culture. There is a lot to report and many enthusiastic people willing to contribute. Many areas has little news and disinterested people.

I would be very surprised if the Evening Gazette is a free newspaper before too long. The London Evening Standard has been one for years.

As you have said you have said the original comment was mistaken, I will edit my comment accordingly. (I am only halfway through this thread and haven't read your clarification).
As for Mckenzie, after Hillsborough and his reporting on Elton John in 80s (just 2 from the top of my head)of course I wouldn't want him to work again. He is a former public schoolboy and well off, unlike most local hacks.

Hppy to see the back of the pair of them, never managed to get to end of any Vickers pieces, hated his 'wordsmith' style, it felt he just wrote sentences and then tried to form articles around them. Once heard him described as as marxist rah rah with a typewriter, still makes me chuckle

 This is a funny post, but not for the reasons you probably think.

Vic is a writer for sure. Not just a journalist; he's a creative writer and it shows. I wonder if he might consider writing a novel or something as he clearly is a wordsmith and he likes to paint a picture within an article or match report.

I didn't agree with everything he wrote but he was passionate, he was a fan and, again, he's lost his job and that's not fun for anyone, especially in today's uncertain times.

- it will be a very different workplace after today. Best wishes Laura.

This is sad news. As an ex-pat you hear nothing about Boro in the national press, so the gazette is a lifeline really. Vickers is a stereo total fan as well, so has excellent taste in music. I will miss their writing and the gazette when it's gone. Hopefully he will start his blog up again.

This Country is getting like America where Trump can say that the TRUTH is like FAKE NEWS. We will end up with just “The Sun” the way things are going. (n):poop:(n)

So the ridiculous comparison between my opinion on two different managers and someone writing an article on how high ticket prices we unnecessary greed, and then later writing a separate article saying high ticket prices were necessary doesn’t stack up?

Who’d have thought.

I find it hilarious when these Anti-Pulis cultists try to use Karanka against me. They had absolutely nothing positive to say about Pulis, not one thing and use projection to accuse me of the same when it comes to Karanka, though I’ve stated for years that I think he’s a fantastic defensive coach and the best football I’ve watched at the Riverside Stadium in the last 15 years was 14/15........under Aitor Karanka.

That’s just deliberately missing the point. I agree that it doesn’t seem to have an awful lot to do with this thread but it’s really simple. You were vociferous in your criticism of Karanka in terms of his style, results and goals. Pulis performed worse in every one of those areas and yet you defended him. It’s as simple and as straightforward as that.

It’s only as simple and straightforward if you have no concept of context or nuance.

It’s funny how you should say all this, especially after you attacked Pulis “for scraping into the play-offs” when he did it by 3 points, yet you took great offence at any suggestion Karanka scraped into the automatic spots on goal difference.

My criticisms of Karanka were his negativity (after spending £30m on attackers to then play more defensive) and his awful man management.

Two things that ultimately cost him his job.
