Anthony Vickers - Over & Out

Huge shame. One of the few writers who can capture the *feel* of a game and put it in words. Some of his stuff on Traore positively bounced off the screen, did three stepovers and left you on your **** in admiration of the prose.

On the positive side, perhaps now we will learn if he ever *posted* on FMTTM, and under what well-hidden guise :)
Buddy is AV and I claim my ten pounds 😉

The written voice of Teesside. My favourite writer at the Gazette. I'm not 100% sure how Tallentire still has a job in all honesty. I've not seen anything of value from him in years.

Seriously I always looked out for his pieces . You could tell he was a proper Boro fan who hurt when we all did and similarly purred when we all rejoiced . He certainly had a gift of the quill . Best wishes AV ✍️

Yes echo most of these sentiments. Met him out in Bucharest walking to the stadium. A true fan, thought provoking writer and a good bloke. Good luck with whatever you do next.

Tallentire's gone as well

I don't always agree with Vic - Boro, football or otherwise, but it goes without saying I wish him well. He has been part of the furniture for the last 30 years.

I do wonder if some of these local journos don't like being told what they can and can't write. The same with the young lad, Jonathan Taylor I think it was, a coupoe of years ago. The club, and Gibson in particular, burnt a few bridges when they banned the Gazette from attending press conferences and matches.

Following the Boro AND working for the Gazette for so long - he obviously enjoyed a life of pain :). All the best AV! You made the job own. All the best!!

Fair play to him if he’s left for more freedom as to what he can and can’t write, the club clearly pulls the strings.

I've enjoyed his articles when I've read them, even if some were a bit verbose.

I've been frustrated with the Gazette in recent years as so much of it is copied and pasted transfer rumours, sounds like the whole of the old guard are gone now.
I wonder what that means for the future.

I actually don’t think anybody always agrees with someone else. I am sure AV would say that his job was to provoke debate and thought - a job he did very well and wasn’t afraid to criticise the club (2017 ban on journalists for example) when required.

doesn’t Eric paylor still write for them despite retiring yonks ago?

Wonder if they’re just handing over to a cheapo team now

I hope he's got something lined up. It should be quite enjoyable for him to be able to go to a game for its own sake without having to think of an angle or knock out a few hundred words.

Great shame. Probably the only real journalist at the Gazette, and certainly in the sports section. Quite how Tallentire got the top job I'll never know. Nevertheless, sad for him too if it's true that he's also lost his job. Best of luck for the future.

Shame to loose them both on the same day!
I really enjoyed Vickers writing, he is a true supporter of our team and our town.
Good luck to both of them, they have added to my enjoyment of following our team over the years.

With this news and the way things are going at the club It Seems like a joyless existence following the Boro at the moment.

looks like it wasn’t just them

Its latest round of cuts – 550 jobs – is equal to 12% of the company’s total workforce. Reach employs about 2,600 editorial staff alone.
The company has said it wants to combine its national and regional teams to create one editorial team across the UK and Ireland, with staff to share stories via a new internal wire service.

Never mind the football coverage, say goodbye to local journalism scrutinising the people making the decisions in your town.
