Anthony Vickers - Over & Out

I’m happy to see both of them gone.

I can do without an imaginary propaganda piece of what Steve Gibson must be thinking from PT.

Reading an AV DNA article is like listening to Jazz, self indulgent with no real substance.

The Gazette sport desk hasn’t been fit for purpose for years, much like Boro’s full time recruitment team.[/QUOTE

The Gazette sport desk hasn’t been fit for purpose for years, well you can guarantee it aint gonna get any better any time soon

It wasn't the presence of praise but the absence of criticism upon which accusations of hypocrisy were correctly based Pog. You hypocritically defended Pulis to the hilt despite having spent a lot of time criticising Karanka for his style of play, his team's goalscoring record and the level of entertainment, all of which were vastly superior to those of Pulis.

So the ridiculous comparison between my opinion on two different managers and someone writing an article on how high ticket prices we unnecessary greed, and then later writing a separate article saying high ticket prices were necessary doesn’t stack up?

Who’d have thought.

I find it hilarious when these Anti-Pulis cultists try to use Karanka against me. They had absolutely nothing positive to say about Pulis, not one thing and use projection to accuse me of the same when it comes to Karanka, though I’ve stated for years that I think he’s a fantastic defensive coach and the best football I’ve watched at the Riverside Stadium in the last 15 years was 14/15........under Aitor Karanka.

Wonder what this will mean for Boro reporting in The Gazette????
Shaw will be able to do the articles 3 people did before????
Also is this a sign of The Gazette scaling down its operations?
Realise that printed media is in decline, but will be very sad if Teesside's local paper is on the way out

Let's not sidetrack - this isn't about usernames, this thread is about Anthony Vickers and also Phil Tallentire both facing up to a future without their employment at the Gazette and it is about a big step further along the line of no longer having our local guide, champion, sounding post, talking shop, point of departure into argument. A whole different ball game for better and far worse.

The sad thing about this for me is the fact that two people have lost jobs they loved doing and the personal impact that has on themselves and their families.

I, at times used to criticise them, for example, for running stories based on things that were discussed on here first, but I later reflected that by doing so they were actually reporting on issues that Boro fans across the area and beyond were clearly interested in as they had created much debate on threads on here and they offered alternate angles on our own visions and reached a different and wider audience.

I suspect those that currently say that they are no loss, will find that actually, they will prove to be a significant loss. There was always a few stories and reports on the Boro every day. They were free to read, provided topics for discussion on here too, which in turn enables traffic that was good for this boards continued survival. I fear we will now see fewer reports and stories in the gazette, save for MFC press releases or just regurgitated offal from various newsnow platforms. We may see more generic drivel of the type we see in the nationals too.

It is a sad day for local journalism across the country, let alone Teesside and its environs, It will likely be a sad day for Boro fans generally as the amount of stories will probably reduce along with their quality. Whether you agreed or disagreed with them at times, they created talking points, provided updates and reports on all things Boro and occasionally the odd scoop. As the song lyrics say, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot”

I wish them both good luck and wish them both well and hope they are able to move on with their new chapters as positively as possible.

Sad they’ve lost an income but I’m not gonna be two faced. The job they did post Karanka was shameful.

I wouldn’t be writing messages of support for Gill either, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mr Warnock has similar concerns. Many people wanted Agnew, Pulis and Woodgate sacked too.

Nowthen. Whether you agreed with them or not or indeed if you felt they didn't represent your viewpoint nobody should be"happy" that they have lost their job. And that goes for anybody in gainful employment who are trying to make a living and support their families - including other employees at MFC. These are awful times to be out of work.

Thats absolutely right. My partner has just lost her job in media and she has little prospect of a new position for the forseeable.

It’s not about me. It’s not about my viewpoint. It’s about not rewriting history and it’s about being honest. Using the word happy was a mistake.

The Gazette and its readers were lucky to have them. Circulation must be 10% of what it was 30 years ago when 50 or so vans left the Borough Road offices every afternoon loaded with papers. The internet has killed local papers everywhere. Where I live the 2 local free papers have gone and there is just a weekly paper left. Papers online don't generate the same revenue.

30 years is a good stint from Vickers - ref Rob comments Vickers must be in his early 50s - he's no spring chicken.

I agree the coverage will decline, but I would guess the papers will say they can't afford 3 local sports journalists. If people wanted them they should have bought the paper copy of the Gazette. I usually did when I came to a home match, but did posters on here?

he is very principled which I like in a person regardless of there views ( unless inmoral or illegal) .... best of luck with the next step forward,,, the past has gone, the future a dream, only now is when you are alive

RIP The Gazette.
We're left with some hack sat in an office somewhere out of beyond who will be churning out stories and then just changing the team/player name.
Sad day for local news and local contents and thus local newspapers.

Thing is RedWurzel, why buy the print edition when you can read the same articles for free on your tablet? The internet hasn't killed local newspapers, news companies have totally ballsed-up how they use the internet.

Local papers have completely knackered themselves over the last 15 years. I don't mean on the editorial side of things, but their whole commercial model seemed to be let their terrible free websites undermine their print editions until they were unsustainable and cut in size or all together.

Then fill their websites with so much spam and **** digital advertising that made their websites unreadable (Would love to see the bounce rate for the GazetteLive site).

At each step of the way failings in revenue generation has led to the companies sacking en-masse the very people who deliver the quality content that would lead to a bigger, better audience, and certainly should provide a service to people living and working outside of the big cities.

Local media has eaten itself alive.

Whatever your views on the writing, a hell of a lot of experience has walked out of the door today.

Local papers are the 21st century equivalent of the town crier - they once served a need but they're obsolete. The Gazette is a shadow of its former self. Like all local papers, it's locked in a cycle of decline - online alternatives lead to falling revenues, cost-cutting, a worse product, fewer readers and, eventually, closure. I suspect AV and PT have grabbed the voluntary redundancy terms while they're still on offer.

Here's a link to the article that explains everything - The Fair posted it earlier.

They could start a Boro/Teesside news YouTube channel as there will be thousands of subscribers for the Boro bit alone bringing in advertisement revenue. A bit of good old fashioned journalism Involved as clearly the future of local news is remote journalists trawling forums like this for news.
