Another summer rebuild?

We have consistently improved our squad for less and brought in funds.. if we continue to improve then we go up. We’re in a good shape.. we have stability and financial security.

We’re getting everything we’ve wanted.. injuries have hampered us this season.. but we can still pull it back.
Thankyou for the opportunity Lord Sugar 👍

That would be the ultimate disaster if Carrick decided he had enough and wanted a different type of challenge. Summer will be interesting. From listening to Scott on the 12th man podcast, didn't seem like the contract offer was done and dusted. Boro need Carrick probably more than he needs us.
I don’t think Carrick would walk, but it’s inevitable that someone like West Ham or Palace will come in for him, then I think we’d struggle to keep him if we’re having to do a rebuild with every summer.

We have to do a rebuild every summer.

I'm losing patience though next season is our 8th outside the Premier league the process is so painfully slow. I feel when anyone of our players does well we just sell them.

Who is left to sell after Hackney and Jones for sizeable fees? Hackney has been off of late and Jones showed potential then lost his way but is now back to showing what he can do

We might get a few quid for McGree

Fry certainly hasn't turned out to be the next Ben Gibson

We haven’t improved every year we’ve been down.. Monk & Pulis wasted a fortune and took us backwards.

Woodgate treaded water and Warnock got us back up and running.. Wilder did not have put best interests at heart.. and now we’re building off from that.

3 year plan.. this season is year 2

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Remember the Mogga rescue and then the Karanka years?

Van den Berg will be sold for north of £10m in a year or so. He really is that good, and could see him being our record sale.

McGree will be off in the summer too. Big job ahead.

Since you seem so adept in predicting the future could you please private message me next weeks lottery numbers as I have bills coming outta my ears atm 🤪

I’m sure I read a poster in here last week who said he’s knows for a fact that McGree is happy here and wants to stay? Or did I dream that?

Honestly dont think he is such a miss. Lots of time away on internationals and quite a few injuries and his form is up and down although he can be very good on the odd times. I would not like to lose him but if we do..................................

Are we heading for another summer rebuild?

Last year we lost 8 first teamers (loans and perms), this summer plus Rogers and crooks were probably loosing:

Done:
1. Rogers
2. Crooks

High Chance
1. Greenwood
2. O’Brien
3. Thomas
4. Paddy
5. Ayling

Risk
1. Howson
2. RVDB
3. Hackney

So another 10 leaving potentially best case 7 on top of last years 8. Does that mean another slow start next year and another “transition season”.
No. Definitely not. I think the major influx of players last summer are being given time to develop. We also won't want to repeat that process again as it asks too much of a number of players to settle in so quickly together,

We’ve already replaced Crooks with Azaz.

Keep:

Dieng, Glover, Fry, Dijksteel, Lenihan, Clarke, RVDB, Bangura, Engel, Hackney, McGree, Azaz, Jones, Forss, Latte Lath

Howson - depending on how he does the rest of the season.

Sell/Leave/Loan:

Jones, Smith, Coulson, McNair, Barlaser, Silvera, Gilbert, Coburn, Hoppe
I’d keep Silvera he’s still young and has shown pace and a few moments. The others yes agreed. I’d considernselling Lenihan as well. Free transfer, 1.5m+ of pure ffp profit for a player that I don’t think gets ahead of fry and rav.

That means we’d need to sign a right back, a CB, 2x CM, a 10, and two CFs.

7 players of which 3 (RB, CM, CF) would certainly need to be nailed on starters. 2 would be in and out the side (CF and 10) and two would be development projects (Cm and CB).

I guess it’s less player but probably more money than last year. Which is a strategic improvement

I think we all know really that this squad is way off being ready for promotion. Players like Matty can go because they are not good enough for a promotion winning side. - harsh but true. Of all the players we need to keep it is HH, the rest of those highlighted above I’m rather ambivalent about. Keep Jones, Hackney, Fry, VbB Dieng as a core the rest can for me be rebuilt and hopefully the squad will be Improved.

I think a lot are leaving but I'm pretty sure we'll be looking to keep our core players this season. Unlike many, I think we'll be able to keep the "crown jewels" unless a top 6 Prem team comes in and promises them the earth. The obvious risk is Spurs for Hackney.
McGree will need to either sign a new deal or leave. With Rogers having gone, I think we'll be hoping for a new deal but I suspect he's the one major sale we're planning for.

Unless O'Brien stinks the place out for the rest of the season, I'm pretty sure we'll buy him. I don't expect us to buy Greenwood unless Leeds fail to get promoted. We have plenty of PSR balance next season so we can afford to spend big by Championship standards. If things go well we are probably looking at just two marque signings and a few back-ups. If we lose some of our crown jewels then we're stuck in another rebuild and that will be depressing.

I think what we're aiming for is [bold for high value signings]
Dieng / Glover / Jones
Smith / [new]
RVDB, Lenihan, Fry, Clarke
Engel / Bangura (or Thomas)
Hackney, O'Brien, Barlaser, [new]
Jones / Forss
[New] / [Greenwood/New]
Azaz / Silvera
[New] / Latte Lath / Coburn

If that works, it means that 9 of our 1st 11 will have been playing together this season and we can focus on quality.

1st Team players required (and I mean players ready to play competitive Championship football from August 24 not 2 years down the line)

LB
RB
CM
ST

Squad Players Required

CM
No10
LF
ST

That's 8 players required right now in my opinion based on losing Crooks, Howson and McNair.
If we lose Hackney, McGree or VDB. Add those positions to the 1st team list.

Centre midfield and striker positions are absolutely critical next season. If Scott fails in those positions then it's a big failure. We've had loads of time to find the right targets. We need a LB to replace last years attempt. Engel is not good enough and Bangura, although has looked like he has potential, doesn't look the end product and hasn't strung enough games together to give you any confidence. Try and shift one of them out and bring a better LB in.

I think the only positions I am comfortable that we have an adequate starter and adequate cover is GK, CB and RF

I agree with most of your post but I feel like not addressing full backs would be a problem. Engel hasn't been good enough and although I like Smith, he's another year older and had a bad injury. I think we need to address the RB position.
