Another summer rebuild?

Are we heading for another summer rebuild?

Last year we lost 8 first teamers (loans and perms), this summer plus Rogers and crooks were probably loosing:

Done:
1. Rogers
2. Crooks

High Chance
1. Greenwood
2. O’Brien
3. Thomas
4. Paddy
5. Ayling

Risk
1. Howson
2. RVDB
3. Hackney

So another 10 leaving potentially best case 7 on top of last years 8. Does that mean another slow start next year and another “transition season”.

Yeah most likely, the guys running the club and recruitment team will know what they need to do.

We don’t need to speculate, we just have to hope they get it right this summer

Its always going to be a mass rebuild when you sell your best players every season not that i consider crooks a starter for us. We will need to sign at least 6 just to stand still. We are trying to build a wall and removing bricks at the same time. Progress is an illusion unless there is significant additional investment

I mean.. every year is re-build innit

Yes but we will all probably get a 50% refund on our season tickets seen as they have give up on this season already.

High Chance

1. Greenwood - If you gave me the option of buying him now I'd say no. I do feel a bit sorry for him as he hasn't had a run of games playing as a 10 (his natural role) but I'd say it's unlikely he'll be given that opportunity now that we have Azaz.

2. O’Brien - Carrick needs to get him into the team to be honest, so that we can judge him. If he does well then I could see him signing in the summer.

3. Thomas - Similiar to O'Brien. Need to see him play so we can make a judgement.

4. Paddy - Fairly certain he will leave.

5. Ayling - Think he's doing okay but I think we will need to sign an upgrade on all of our current RBs in the summer. Will be happy for us to sign Ayling on a permanent deal if we sell Djiksteel, which would leave us with Ayling, Smith and hopefully a new RB.

Risk

1. Howson - Will stay in my opinion

2. RVDB - Same as above

3. Hackney - 50/50 for me

Youcan see the issue with loans. That's probably why the club wants to move away from it.

It's a short term fix. Also develops another club's players with no longterm benifit to us.

I don't think it's a massive rebuild. We've good young players and signings who will be all the better for a season in the champo.

Mcnair is one of the last from the crazy wages days. Howson is 35 and we've had our moneys worth and some. The rest are pretty 'meh'. I'm not sure we'd sign any of the loans. I guess O'Brien yet we've not seen him.

Ayling has filled a gap and suited both parties. That said Ayling and Thomas are out of contract in the summer. So up to them to impress for us to sign permanently.

Rav and Hackney will be wanted. Yet every player has a price and we'd make a fecking fortune on either. Like Rogers you can't knock that.

It won't be as bad as last summer. Losing the golden boot and assist winner. Also Ramsey and Archer. That's a rebuild that was never realistic or achievable.

We were always going to.

People who like to be glass 3 quarters full will say that it's not going to be that bad, but we're either going to have yet another sea of change or another season of mediocrity.

The squad needs major work even without outgoings, and there will be outgoings.

Yes, but you'd prefer it to be evolution rather than revolution.
Maybe..

Dijksteel - Ben Johnson - West Ham - Free
McNair - Nathan Wood - Swansea - Free
Coulson - Luke Thomas - Leicester- Free
Howson - Josh Brownhill - Burnley - Free
Gilbert - Tyrhys Dolan - Blackburn - Free
Crooks - Callum O’Hare - Coventry - Free
Greenwood - Divin Mubama - West Ham - Free
Hoppe - Daniel Jebbison - Sheff Utd - Free

Plenty of free agents that could maybe push us forward against our fringe players..

We need 4 players for probably 20 mil as it stands today.
( Presuming RVDB , HH , Mcgree, Jones stay )

A right back with some pace and relative experience . So we ' could wingback ' if needed .

An athletic bodyguard for Hackney, who can hit a ball edge of their box. ( Maybe O'Brien ?? )

A left sided forward who might go outside, but will graft back ( Ashley Young type of player )

A CF who's got an actual goal scoring history , not a project.

Looking forward to next season the major loss for me is Rogers. Finding his feet and very good goal involvement stats. He could have been a massive asset next year. Crooks and Howson cannot be mainstays for a team wanting promotion. Greenwood is a high pressing beast but seems a bit of a lone wolf in the team. better than Silvera but doesn’t get in front of Forss / Mcgree / Jones for me. Paddy wouldn’t be too much of a loss and his wages could potentially be recycled into 2 / 3 players. I haven’t seen enough of O’brien but seeing as he has hardly played for us what are we replacing? Ayling is cover for Smith and in the shop window. Thomas is cover for Bangura who should be fit next season. I liked what we did last summer but the profile of player for me suggested we were just at the start of developing a squad and U21 potential. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got another 7 or 8 in this summer. Keeping the successful ones is going to be the problem whilst we are in the championship ang @Glover_elbow put it nicely with his wall analogy. That said, if we manage to keep the likes of Mcgree, Hackney and VDB I think next year we will have a much better squad than we have now.

Josh Brownhill was made to get a team in the top 4

Unless he’s not

I can’t see him leaving unless he reallly starts to get some consistency in his appearances and of course he can score at least 5-10 goals before the end of the season.

12 months left on his contract come the summer. Wants to play at the highest level. A premiership club will come calling and we won’t risk losing him on a free.

Only way he stays is if we somehow go up this season.
