Andy McDonald resigns from shadow cabinet

I can't believe how many people on here are so naive. Of course it would be great if workers got £15 an hour minimum and because of that people already on £15 will ask for more and get it. You are living in cloud cuckoo land.
Got to move incrementally.

No you probably can't sell 15 quid an hour to the electorate your right there.

There is nothing wrong with the principle though.
Why do the electorate want to pay more taxes for the welfare top ups to people when their employers should be paying them a "living wage"?

At least billionaires continue to double their wealth every 5 years, most of whom employ vast numbers of people on a pittance.

I don't disagree, but it's kinda difficult to get that message across to the electorate in a 3 word slogan. On here we are largely preaching to the choir, most people don't engage very much.

It shows how complex getting simple (true) messages across are. Different types of debt are the other mystery that most of us don't understand, other than it's the magic money tree.

People would understand a legal minimum living wage that is higher than now, but not £15/hour. Making it £10.50 now would reduce income inequality and not lose middle England.

Also the living wage only covered people 25 or over. I think it has been reduced, but should be at least anyone 21 or above.

Restore the 10% tax band would be a good move too.

Close many of the tax relief schemes

Increase the housing supply in the South East to reduce the very high rents there. A guy was on the radio and said his rent was £850/month on a 1 bed flat and he needed to work 60 hours per week just to survive. I can understand what he is saying but why say outside London are rents £850 per month on a small 1 bed flat.

CEO's should get no more than a certain multiple of the average wage they pay employees of their company. They can pay themselves as much as they want, they just have to up everyone elses wage to do it.

Good riddance Andy Mac. Spend more time on your golf game 👍. Labour will never get elected from a left of Centre approach and so I wish momentum and corbyn et al would crawl into a deep hole somewhere and never come back because they’ll never have power in this country BECAUSE people don’t want leftist polices anymore.
right of Centre is the way labour win elections but the likes of momentum are extremists to not want to see this

It doesn't reflect well on Andy McDonald whatsoever creating headlines and allowing the media to look and deflect away from the corrupt and inept government.
Well said
He knew he was on borrowed time and choose to get out before being kicked out

People may not want leftist policies anymore but they need leftist policies more than ever.
The right are more openly, and progressively corrupt, helping their friends proffit through a pandemic
The super rich are multiplying their billions on the backs of the poor.
The increasingly exploited workers are paying the wage bill of the billionaires through the benefit system.
The meda are more collusive than ever before.
Meanwhile, the main opposition party - rather than combatting all of this - are moving quickly and not so quietly to the right to provide as little friction or resistance as possible to this despicable situation.

Those that don't want left wing policies are either complicit or at least comfortable with the above or, more likely, have been conned. The need now is not to capitulate to those who feel they don't want leftist policies but to win the argument that it is exactly what we do need. More than ever.

Exactly what we don’t want when a unified confident Labour is essential to get rid of the worst government and worst leader in living memory. Sick of people putting themselves before the party and the country. Listened to all the commentary on this today and it wasn’t Labour withdrawing from a pledge as McDonald claimed, they simply wanted to do the figures and background before nailing their colours to the mast. Of course McDonald used it to vent his spleen as he was carried into a fringe event at conference to attack Starmer - really helpful

"People don't want leftist police anymore". Stop talking *****.

In the 2017 general election, the Labour Party received 12,878,460 votes.

This was a huge increase on what it had achieved in recent elections, indeed the biggest increase in vote share since Clement Attlee led Labour to victory in 1945, and was the party’s biggest tally since Tony Blair’s first victory in 1997.

It was also a much bigger total than the Tories had achieved to enter government in 2010 and 2015. That's a lot of people attracted to 'leftist' policies. So please get your facts right.

Blind boy; look, I’d love leftist policies but we are dealing with a corrupt media 98% controlled by the billionaires, a Tory party looking after them, a staunch Tory now installed at the head of the bbc.
A Tory party is utterly evil and corrupt they will lie as much as required to retain power and the only way to defeat this and bring onside the thick greedy British public is firmly a middle ground approach

Anything else then wave goodbye to power via our Labour Party for another 10 years and then this country will be a basket case. It already is to be fair
