8 days of mourning - is it for real?

I know all people don't think like me, here's your chance to explain how that one quirk of birth makes him more significant than anyone else...
That quirk of birth led him to being the Queen's husband, to claim that is of no significance is to be deliberately obtuse and if that is lost on you such is your dislike of any kind of difference in life, then you will always be bitter, and that will do you no good, it will eat away at you and only you will pay that price

they can always abdicate.....but they don't tend to do that because of the copious amounts of power and wealth that comes with the role.....and they bully and ostracise people that do.
You really think it is about the money and power, like they are meglamaniacs or something, they would swap it in a heartbeat to be a normal anonymous person, I am sure but they have the backbone to carry out their National duties and obligations. Would like to see you working tirelessly, travelling around, talking and taking interest in everyone, thousands of people, at the age of 95.

It's far from deliberately obtuse it's the facts.

Your answer seems to be he was born royal and married royal so ergo he is more significant and more deserving than anyone.....yet I have small man syndrome. It's gross to believe someone is better and more special purely by their genetics. You should be ashamed of yourself.

It's circumstance as much as genetics, and we're all victim to that in some way or another

You believe in a tiered system where some people are more deserving and more important than others, regardless of what they do with their life. That's an absolutely shameful way to view people. No wonder this country is FUBARed

I can’t begin to equate remembrance of those who have died in conflicts and respect shown to Philip, two very different things.

I am quite indifferent to Philip’s passing but eight days of mourning????!!!! FFS.
You don’t need to mourn for 8 days, if that’s what you were thinking.

And you believe that all animals are equal, but as we know, some are more equal than others

And no, I don't believe "some people are more deserving and more important than others regardless of what they do with their life", more that the impact they had on others is what differentiates

The idea that some children are born more important than others is one step away from ordering these kids in importance from right to left, it's the same ball park. You either judge peoples worth on how they've led their life or on eugenics 1618087645706.png

mate you've already talked about the significance of philip and based it on the fact that he was born royal and married royal...and that's it. He is no more significant than anyone else.

Ok, I'm calling it. You are definitely a wind-up merchant. You got me good :D (y)

They don't have to. As far as I am concerned there should be no royalty but seeing as we are stuck with them , the queen and Philip should not be expected to work themselves until they die. They should have retired at 60 and 65 years old and enjoyed their time with their brood.
The choice was in their hands
What sort of government or nation wants people to carry out National duties and obligations until they die. It is obscene.

clearly a troll. They could walk away right now, and they never ever will.

I find the ones that claim they'd love to be normal are also the ones that hate Harry & Meghan for, you know walking away

There’s no bigger opponent of monarchy than me, but I’ve recently become a bit more at ease with the idea that it isn’t the family themselves who perpetuate it. It is the people of this country who have allowed it to survive this long.

A line from the Crown springs to mind (fictitious yes but still relevant): “the British people don’t know what they want.”

We’re an incredibly confused nation in terms of identity. Former superpower and empire, now not entirely sure whether we want to be a European nation, a 51st state, a historical kingdom/monarchy, a progressive utopia, a small “empire”, a union of 4 countries or just 1 country of 4 separate “states”. Some of those 4 countries aren’t even sure whether they want in long-term, and I think there’ll be big developments on that in the relatively near future. Big crossroads for Britain/UK (wherever it is we live). But yes, we don’t know what we really want and that’s why we still have a monarchy, because it’s too big a stake in the ground to remove it.

I do think we’re getting there though. Brexit was part of that process. Covid has been another, the death of QE2 will be another.

Would love to see the follow up to Prince Andrew walking away from his Royal privilege
