3 players at Boro allegedly going up for sale

Build the team around Tav.

Bola, Dijksteel, Fry, Hall, McNair, Howson, Morsy would all play a lot of games.
Johnson, Browne squad players, along with the best of the youngsters.
I still think Coulson could make it

The rest can and should go

Need 2 keepers, another CB, midfield box to box, a number 10 and 3 new strikers.
Agree with that.

Unfortunately, there is no chance of us achieving that over the closed season and in the remaining time Warnock has left here.
Then we will be back to square one (possibly!).

Akpom and Saville cost 9.6mil...... How much we getting back? 2-3 at best😕?

That's some shambolic spending if you already think Britt / Fletcher and Johnson are leaving for nothing to the tune of 25mil outlay.

No wonder we are skint. It's like buying 4 houses at top dollar and giving them away.

Dan, what makes you think that Saville is unsettled here?
Not having a go, genuinely interested in why you think that?

As others have said in this thread:
I think we have a massive job ahead of us if we think we are going to get promoted next season.
Our squad seems to be mainly made up of 'loanees', 'want a ways' and 'dog egg' players, with a smaller number of good players.

(But, what do I know? I would be delighted to be proven wrong!)

It's ok mate I know you're not having a go (y)

I'll be honest, i haven't got much to base it on, I think it's because he's from the london area and he took a couple of seasons to get settled in and start playing well (took a LOT of stick from fans at times too). I did hear whispers he was struggling to settle up here in the early days too.

That said - i'm a fan of saville albeit he can go missing in games. He's a 110%'er everytime he plays, passionate and vocal too. Pulis got pelters for saying he'll captain the club one day and I honestly don't think it was as stupid a statement as everyone made out, as he seems like he's got something about him in that aspect.

I honestly think he's tailor made for a holding midfield role personally - he played there a couple of times towards the end of last season and had 2 very solid games there.

If he stays, i really think thats how he should be used next season.

It pains me to say it, but I honestly don't know whats happened to Howson these last 6-8 weeks, maybe burnt out but he's been a shadow of the player from earlier this season.

I honestly don't know what people see in Saville. 38 games & 5 goals.

He gives a 110% - so what, that's the very minimum you should expect from every player who walks out onto the pitch.

Not good enough either as a holding player or an attacking midfielder for me & if we could get any kind of decent fee for him I'd sell him.

Tav seems to be getting more than his share of injuries this season. Cannot build a team around someone who is not on pitch. Hopefully it might not be same next season but it is a massive gamble.

Fully agree. His “110%” consists of covering a lot of ground to be in good areas (up with play or back goal side). That’s important, in a player, but not as important as making an impact from those positions. His tackles tend to be off balance or tugging the shirt/shoulder, his passing can be decent, but only given the space you don’t get in this league, and his forward runs can be lung-busting but he’s so one-footed that his finishing is very poor and he’s easy to show onto his weaker foot.
He’s also got the courage of a sparrow.
Mid table player at best, and that’s not what we need.

Agree, that’s the concern, but he’s some player when he’s fit. Still young enough to strengthen up, I hope

Agree Saville isn't amazing, but Howson has 137 appearances and 4 goals and he's lauded as a top midfielder and is rarely criticised on here, he cost £6 million, Saville £7 million.

I think it is fair to say all of our midfielders have been much worse than we expected/hoped, despite doing better elsewhere. Is it more our set-up and approach?

I honestly can barely remember us bossing the midfield and looking well in control since the final Karanka Championship season.

There isn't a single player I'd be heartbroken to lose, be sad to see Tav or Fry leave, as they're our best players and have come through here, but it's not as if either are really irreplaceable.

I'm really worried by the size of the rebuilding job in front of us, with a manager in his final year, little or no money, dreadful signings in the main from the the current gaffer, and woeful signings in the main from our recruitment department for about 6 or 7 years.

I suppose the only real positives I can see are, we should have a decent size wage budget for frees, and Jesus Christ I doubt we could do much worse, we must be due a couple of good strikers and an assist machine at some point!

I'm a Saville fan too.
Yes, he's not the greatest ever Boro player, but I would definitely keep him. We can't blame him that we massively overpaid Millwall for this services.
Having said that, if we are desperate for cash, or he wants away, then get shot.

I completely agree about Howson. Hopefully he is just burnt out.
I'm a massive fan of his, but his form has massively disappeared.....

Football is all about opinions (y)

Allegedly, Saville wants out - so this being the case let’s get as much as we can for him - which will probably be less than half what we paid....

I know some are on loan, and we've had a poor 2nd half of the season but i really do think we have a strong enough squad with a couple of tweaks:

For example:

1 GK
1 CM
2 CF

Bin off: Spence, Spence, Spence, Spence, Britt, Fletcher, Akpom, wing, coulson.

Keep who we brought in January (hopefully).

With a new keeper and 2 good strikers I honestly don't think we're too far away.

Dan, sorry, I disagree. 1 keeper, 1 full back, 2 midfielders, 2 widemen 3 strikers - and this being the minimum. If Sol is used more then 1 keeper at least, if not, 2.

So 9 being the amount needed- possibly more.

I think age has caught up with Howson a bit and don't know about everyone else but I'm not sure what his role is meant to be - he just seems to sit back and tidy up after everyone else rather than having a defined role. His days of being an attacking midfielder are long gone.

Archer, Mendez-Laing, Johnson, Fletcher, Assombalonga out of contract. Bettenelli, Bolasie & Kabano loans ending. Potentially 3/4 or 5 getting moved on (Stojanovic, Spence, Coulson, Wing, Akpomb)

That's 12 or 13 players to replace - that's a big ask for anyone to take on.
Agreed, but as some of them contribute nothing it will be an improvement if the new ones do

how many players did we bring in for our promotion season under Karanka? or indeed how many did we let go.

I think it was something like 18!!
