3 players at Boro allegedly going up for sale

Right there you've got a decent backbone. Add a wide player and a half decent keeper and the right player up front and you've got a good team.

The team that Karanka got up wasn't as good as the one the year before. But it was better drilled, and had a fighting spirit. We also signed the right player in Nugent. Not the greatest centre forward we've ever had. And he didn't get many goals. But he worked well in a team. We don't need the best centre forward in the league or the most prolific. We just need the right player. People often talk about Ramirez being the key, but the team was knocking about at the top of the league long before he turned up.

The idea that our recruitment team is bad is off. We've signed plenty of decent players over the last few years. Plenty of stinkers as well. The damage has come from employing an idiot like monk, and then a dogmatist like Pulis.

Don't sign loads of mediocre players. Sign 3 or 4 good ones for the right positions.

I agree with everything bar Saville. He is absolutely not part of decent backbone.

Disagree. Howson and Saville would be top of my list along with Akpom to get rid of. Keep Spence, Coulson, Wing maybe even Johnson for depth. That way we’re buying starters not starters and squad players.

Of the players NW has mentioned, Jonny Howson has struggled since his return from an injury that kept him sidelined for a while, for me he's been a very good signing for us, maybe he just had enough of the players who were under performing each week

I certainly don't think savilles a great player. But I'd rather we concentrated our spending on a striker, keeper and a winger. Howson was terrible the last few games. Hopefully that's just burn out as for the previous 20 months or so he's been decent. He looked like the only decent player on the field at times under Woodgate.

I’d keep Marvinho too. Regularly beats his marker and crosses well. Played part in majority of the few goals we scored first half of season and must be disappointed with significantly reduced role second half. Perhaps he doesn’t show as well in training?

Howson can do a job as a squad player, but his legs had clearly gone a year ago. He can use his head and get through plenty of games but will continue to be culpable for letting runners run off him due to age. People were fooled that he still had it when he played CB and had 2 decent games. He shouldn't be a regular he isn't good enough for that anymore.

I agree, he's been an excellent signing for me but since his return from injury he's not been at the same level of consistency as he was, squad layer for me to, if we can get someone in, or a player who could already be here, who does a better job then we are improving, no disrepect to Howson mind

Im not sure Howson was an excellent signing, he is just the best of Monk's summer of folly.
He at least gives his all and sadly remains one of our better players. It is undeniable that he has had a very poor run since Christmas, but it has been a long run of football.

I think the money will be there in one form or another, just with the players out of contract leaving. Obviously we have to keep tightening out belt which is not ideal. But there are players out there.

Pretty close again, obviously the club are not going to sign nothing but free agents.. the players moving in were pretty close that season too.

We'd need to get close to the same for Akpom to cover book value without a hit. I can't see us getting that for him from anyone, it will cost money to get rid of him, but he's useless and I hope we do.

Spence is all profit whatever fee we get and I think there's probably enough to cover a shortfall in an Akpom fee.

That would be 3 complete wastes of space moved at no cost and wage bill freed to recruit better and sign players that can become assets.

I was spot on re Saville.
The loan got us a much bigger fee than anybody would have thought for Spence, but the principle was right.
Like literally everyone else, I was wrong about Akpom. It wasn't the first time and won't be the last:)
