2024: Fitness - Walking/Running/Cycling/Swimming/Gym/Diet?

I've put on over a stone since I took early retirement but when I was at work I was always on the go in the school and I'm not doing half as much as I used to. I also got out walking and would regularly be out doing a reccy for walks for my DofE groups. I also think going over to France for eight weeks doesn't help.

Towards the end of last year, I was looking at getting the train from Ormesby over to the Danby or Castleton area and doing a few walks on the moors. I need to stop looking at this and put it into action.

Diet wise, I always found eating a little often was better than cutting right back and starving yourself. I also think you need to have one cheat meal so you have something to look forward to. My issue at the moment is eating far too much cheese and this is something I do both at home and when we are in France.

I have my son's wedding coming up in August and would like to shed the stone I've put on before that. We always did the red day green day in the past and this worked for us.
I’ve got an Esk Valley Railcard , cost £10 and you get a third off each journey, quite often get on at Nunthorpe and jump off at Battersby, Kildale, Commondale or Castleton then walk or jog home, 👍🏃‍♂️🚶‍♂️

I first read that and thought Castleton is miles and miles away from Nunthorpe. But looking it up, 14-15 miles on foot. Sounds like a lovely distance and great scenery for the most part. 👍

I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been. 18st. I am 6-3’’ however.
I was over 4 stone lighter 3 years ago. Determined to get back somewhere near that this year 💪

Bad year for fitness with bursitis last year. Back running now... going steadily, mostly low heart rate, on the hills. About 20 miles a week now. Alternate run days with walk days (walking not counted in mileage). Diet wise, usual low carb ... cut back on the booze. It's slowly paying off.

Told I had a dicky heart valve, makes me breathless walking, but can still knock out a HIT session on the bike.
Hoping to do some walking in the Peaks when the weather improves.(y)

I am roughly the same weight give or take a pound or 2 I was at 16 or 17, never followed a diet not sure if they work long term. Just try and keep active with some sort of exercise most days don't eat massive meals and eat healthy as possible and don't eat too much sugary stuff if possible, kind of a life style choice

Started eating better and less since early November.

Lost a stone so far. Want to lose around 10 pounds more.

Weight loss rate is slower now. As I have allowed myself some treats. Two alcoholic drinks a week from just before Xmas. Added two sweet days now. Where I am allowed to have a bit of a chocolate or a small bit of dessert.

Have not changed exercise much. Golf 2-3 times a week. Pilates twice a week. Short mat bowls twice a week.

I seem to have finally cracked the diet, mainly to help with ongoing skin issues (psoriasis and eczema).

I've not been on the bike properly for nearly 18 months now, mainly due to the psoriasis which is badly irritated by the constant sweating. Pretty gutting really.

Anyone else suffer with this and got any tips? One major issue is cycling helmet causing flare ups on my head. Ive tried loads of different pads with no real change.

Its mad because when I first started cycling properly back in around 2010 I rode on average 200-300km per week and did loads of sportifs including >100milers. Never ever had an issue. Then stopped cycling properly in around 2017 when we had kids and bought a house that needed fully renovating. Got back on the bike over lockdown and suffered ever since......

Get on Zwift. No helmet required in your garage.
Yeah this would help with the contact issue, but not the sweating!

Honestly mate, its a ball ache. Thats why I've pretty much taken the time off the bike to let things settle down. Its improving now, so I am going to be getting back on it soon, aiming for March but will have to see.

Question on the zwift / turbo in general, can you use them with a CF frame? I've read contrasting information and Canyon (my bike manufacturer) state not to use it on one!
