‘Playing out from the back’

That’s it though I think that was the game management approach. Hold on to the ball.

I have to say Carrick got it completely wrong tonight. I know it’s our style to play out from the back but we didn’t over do it in home leg and it paid dividends. Today we needed to turn them over and play in their half even if just to buy minutes and a breather but we didn’t and we’ve been hammered.

Hopefully he learns and we learn how to play to plan B.

The only difference tonight from the first leg is we didn't get punished from our mistakes and we had an outlet.

We needed everything to go our way, it didn't. Changing our style of play would still require the same, even if we had the options available to do so.

IMHO, your spot on, but, Carrick Ball is not going to work here. You just can not polish a turd. I think he will be gone season end to a team who can play his style of football.
Will be great to watch.
We will will most likely get JW for a season.

Hope Im wrong, UTFB
Well done to the 4000 who made us all proud tonight.
You’re dead right. It’s definitely not going to work.

He‘s been here just over a year now and all he’s done is give us a play off semi final, a play off chase this season, a league cup semi final and at times some of the best football we’ve seen in years. All achieved by these unpolished turds you’re on about!

I agree in some ways, but I think it's the direction the club want to take. Look at Swansea for years they played the same way with many different managers, the k we are looking to do that, while in the meantime carry on making profits wherever we can.

The playing out from the back was strictly kept to today. Like massively overly done. It wasn’t in the first leg.

I don’t think it was against villa either. We conceded 1 goal in both those games and good chunks of the game looked solid.

We looked like conceding every time we got caught out tonight yet didn’t change tack.

It wasn't just at the back. We didn't spend any time in possession. We couldn't get away from our goal. We had 4 central midfielders in our team tonight and none of them looked comfortable with the ball. We couldn't put a string of passes together at any point. A lot of that was Chelsea's press. They didn't give us time but even when we got the ball in space we looked like we were scared to have it.

I love the way we play but you have to be aware of what you are up against. When we played Chelsea in the FA Cup under Wilder we were very aggressive with our press and they just played through it and it was a bit of an eye opener to see that we weren't all that. Tonight was the same. It's great having a way of playing but you have to adapt to the opposition. We're not good enough to play our own game at Stamford Bridge.

At the end of the day they are / were just better than us. Biggest difference between the Premier League and Championship is pace and it showed tonight. Things we get away with in the championship with the likes of Hugill you don't get away with against them tonight.

Forget it, move on, put another 4 past the makems

We had no outlet, that is why. It wasn't some planned out thing, we just had no options against a far superior team.

We conceded early, that's what killed us. The same would likely have happened if we did against Villa and in the first leg. Likewise if we scored early on Saturday.

We are not a prem team. We got a good seeing to from a top prem team so thats not a reason to throw it all away and start again.
Our bottle went tonight. Losing the ball and failing to pass to a team member has nothing to do with the quality of the opposition.

The occasion got the better of most of the team and understandably because none of them have played at that level before.

Burnley tore strips of us last season and cantered the Champo - now look at them.

The gap between the premier league and the championship is frightening and is just getting bigger and bigger.

It's not just playing out of defence as a concept that's the issue, it's the execution sometimes, the choice of pass and the hesitation on the ball. Hackney playing Barlaser in to trouble tonight needlessly, Clarke coming out of defence with the ball and looking unsteady and playing sloppy passes.

Tonight it just happened time and time again, and I would guess that some of that was down to the pressure of the semi-final and playing at Stamford Bridge. He's by and large been really good for us since coming back in to the team after his injury, even in the first leg against these, but tonight Clarke was especially bad and sloppy I think. The hardest part to take about getting absolutely battered 6-1 is that they didn't have to work for it, it was never a 6-1 game, but we gifted them most of their goals being daft at the back. Just got more and more skittish as it went on.
That pass to Barlasser gets played all of the time, he took his eye off it and didn't move his feet. It was very poor/tired. Same for Hackney with the Clarke pass. Both were individual mistakes (as were many of the others).

I think Hackney played the same pass not long after and nearly played us in to trouble again with it again as well.

We had no outlet? Crooks and Rogers just not exist then?

We didn’t need to win. We didn’t need an outlet to get in behind them, we needed the ball away from their billion pound strike force. To argue against that now after getting smashed 6-1 by our own mistakes is bonkers. Make a mistake up top and it means nothing. Make mistake after mistake at the back and you get smashed like we did.

We’d have gotten equally battered playing the way you are suggesting.

We gifted them the goals, too many lost passes and putting ourselves under pressure. Just not good enough to be honest, we can't keep clean sheets in the championship so how were we going to keep Chelsea out.

It’s much easier to play out from the back when you of the luxuries of…
Having any fit strikers
Having any available wingers
Having your first choice keeper
Having had any consistency in player availability in defence
Not playing against a team where multiple single players cost more than your whole squad.

As has been mentioned, it’s great when it works most weeks, but unless we stick with it we’ll never perfect it. I can barely think of two games in a row this season where we’ve had consistent players at the back, and that’s before you consider Engel, VDB, Bangura, Ayling etc… are all new to this team.

Disagree. We played that way for much of home leg with Coburn up there grafting but I think he lost the ball just about every single time it went near him. Chelsea are slow burners, they have struggled all season against teams that set up to be difficult to break down.

They didn’t have to break anyone down tonight cos we did it for them.
