‘Playing out from the back’

We didn't "nullify" them by doing that, they missed numerous great chances and were still a consistent threat.

To nullify them would be to limit the above.

By far the biggest factor in both games was scoring after 15 minutes.

You literally have no idea what you’re talking about.

Obviously, I surrender to your vast footballing brain in which we nullified Cole Palmer to miss sitters.

“They went 4-2-3-1 first leg and we started 5-3-2 and changed formation several times in an attempt to nullify them, and barring a few mistakes it worked”.

What do you think few mistakes refers to?

Could it be the Cole Palmer sitters they missed? The ones we gifted them by playing out from the back and misplacing passes?

Second half of the first leg when we defended properly and with around 20 mins to go stopped playing out from the back under instruction from Carrick, we nullified them and left them knocking the ball around on the edge of the box in a horse shoe shape and taking pot shots.

Tonight we let them right in behind us, the formation and team structure killed us. That’s on Michael Carrick.

If hartlepool played it out everyweek in the national league and they draw Liverpool in the fa cup at anfield you would expect them to change it. To play it out against championship teams is fine for us although i think we over do it as we dont have any variation. To play every single ball short last night and put the team under pressure was absolutely lunacy chelsea couldnt believe thier luck.

I have to agree to an extent, it required a bit of a David v Goliath cup performance tonight and we got a lamb to the slaughter performance.
Trying to play out from the back against Chelsea was naive, but again we didn’t have the pace or personnel to go long, parking the bus would probably have been the best option but that eventually would have been broken down with their intricate passing, pace and just splitting our defence open at will sometimes.
This season has been blighted by injury, can’t remember a season like it, to lose so many good players, Lenigan and Smith at back, O’Brien was playing out of his skin when he got injured, the pace of Latte Lath up front a big miss, we have nearly a new injury every game, meaning it is hard to get a consistent starting team. Doing well though under the circumstances, semi final of a major cup and still in striking distance of the play off,s, season is still alive, despite all the set backs.

I dont even think we are good at playing out at the back in championship most games we give away huge chances the difference being in the championship most times they are missed.

I thought you might have woken up in a more positive mood but sadly not.

Do we have another whole day of you moaning to look forward to?

It also leads to us “getting out” multiple times in most games we play. This leads to us creating plenty of chances. The fact that we miss them is possibly why you can’t see the benefits. If we were more clinical we’d have scored a bunch of goals this season as a direct result of playing out from the back.

Picking the bones out of last nights game, yes we got picked off playing from the back. But long balling it would result int eh same because we were shorn of any pace with injuries to Jones, Lath and Bangura. We had to play 4 at the back when we really wanted to play 5, and to be honest that suited chelsea better.

We were playing a world class high press, they had no jeopardy since they knew our fast players were injured, so their defence sat high and that allowed their forwards and midfield to be aggressive....we were on a hiding to nothing if we are honest.11 players injured and 9 more not match fit and unable to play 90.

The confidence went in the first half at one stage, and we really gave them 3 or 4 goals in the end. We have a philosophy though, asking them to do something entirely different to what they usually do is really unlikely to work and long balling to a lone striker with no support marked by Thiago Silva and Colwill isn't going to work either.

We just have to take it on the chin that they are a far far superior set of players to us, and it was a learning curve for us. We learned that RVDB clearly has teh ability to play higher, that Engel and Clarke don't have the pace to play higher than the champ. We learned that Barlaser can't play higher than the champ, but Hackney showed glimpses that he can. Crooks can't and Rogers can.

For me RVDB should be number one CB next season, and if still here, Rogers supporting a striker will score goals.

It is what it is, it was a massive long shot, we had to get possession and try and spend time on the ball, because letting them come at us in waves would have killed us too. If we are honest, we could have lost the home leg 4-1 if Palmer could finish.
