Anthony Vickers - Over & Out

The print journalism has been on the wain for years and None more so than in local titles which now have become dominated by advert content As the circulation numbers dwindled so has revenue from advertising and inevitably cuts ensue. The days of true local newspapers is coming to an end. Oh how I used to enjoy running to the newspaper shop for the Evening Sports Gazette football reports and results when a lad. Days that have gone forever.

True gent True supporter. He didn't let his privileged position get in they way of saying what he meant and more importantly what he felt. His Untyipical columns were always an interesting and sometimes thought provoking read. I know it's the done thing on this board to hammer the Gazette but I come from a generation of back to front paper readerrs. The only information you got was from the Gazette. Cliff..... Eric..... Anthony the baton is passed on or is it? How much reliable information do you get from Newsnow?
Anthony you did your best you will be missed.

Shame to loose them both on the same day!
I really enjoyed Vickers writing, he is a true supporter of our team and our town.
Good luck to both of them, they have added to my enjoyment of following our team over the years.

With this news and the way things are going at the club It Seems like a joyless existence following the Boro at the moment.
We've just appointed the best manager we possible could have and its joyless?

What a very sad day to see Anthony Vickers and Phil Tallentire both leaving the Gazette. Phil had been Boro editor for the whole of the century and Vic had been reporting Boro for near on thirty years. Anthony started out as an enemy within for Keith Lamb and Boro - he was a founder of the FSA locally and reported as Chairman Vic in the fanzine - an outlet and sounding board for disenchanted fans he certainly ruffled feathers and then through his work at the paper he brought fan issues right to the fore. They became the heart of the matter, it was novel then but now totally taken for granted.
As he mentions in his final column he gave a helping hand, with the formation of 12th man, Red Faction, the move stands for 12th man and his discussions behind the scenes helped fuel many quiet revolutions in ticketing price structures, all sorts of things.
If Fmttm had any landmarks then Vic would phone me and often he would write up pretty much the whole piece including embelishing my rubbish quotes into something I really ought to have said. I could trust him to do a far better job than myself because he has been steeped in the fan movement from the start.
Phil Tallentire is a hard working journalist, lover of live music and thoroughly likeable guy who reports what he sees and again loves his Boro. I recently interviewed him about his first Boro match, coming down from upper Teesdale as a young boy to stand awestruck on the Holgate.
This is such a massive loss and leaves a great void for Boro fans. But first and foremost I am thinking about the two of them and their families. It must be daunting for them, both a lot younger than me and out of work, trying to follow on from the job they both loved. I wish you well, Anthony and Phil and thanks so much for helping put so many Middlesbrough memories into words.

Sad to see. Decent writer whose tone I always thought was far closer to a real fan's voice than what had gone before. The fact that the honesty and rawness of his opinions ruffled feathers at the club sufficiently to get him banned reflected badly on them, not him. He should bring out a book or two.

Sad to see him go, I always found him a good read. Wrote with passion and insight, and a champion of the fan

I have really enjoyed AVs stuff over the years and he will leave a hole for me in reporting the Boro. I do tend to read a lot and there are few reporters that could put Teesside on a page as he did. Unfortunately in these digital times some peoples talent isnt rewarded as it should be and in the press industry this is affecting local news a bit more than the national press. I wish it were reversed. Good luck to him. I am sure he will keep writing and I will certainly buy his material. Thanks AV if you are reading👍

I’m happy to see both of them gone.

I can do without an imaginary propaganda piece of what Steve Gibson must be thinking from PT.

Reading an AV DNA article is like listening to Jazz, self indulgent with no real substance.

The Gazette sport desk hasn’t been fit for purpose for years, much like Boro’s full time recruitment team.

Sad to see them both go, enjoyed reading their pieces. Really the end of an era and I suspect the slow death of most local newspapers. I hope they both continue to post on social media and wish them well in whatever they choose to do next. They both had the job I would have absolutely loved to have had if I did my time again!

Find me one thread or post where I praised Tony Pulis’ style of football.

Take all the time you need.

It wasn't the presence of praise but the absence of criticism upon which accusations of hypocrisy were correctly based Pog. You hypocritically defended Pulis to the hilt despite having spent a lot of time criticising Karanka for his style of play, his team's goalscoring record and the level of entertainment, all of which were vastly superior to those of Pulis.

Happy to see people out of work?
