The United ***show of America

Boromart. That could be true but to think Tennessee is in the backwoods is wrong. We have COVID here but as a state we ate not densely populated. Memphis Nashville have the highest number of infections and deaths and have the highest population density. Housing projects, apartments and closer dwellings never to each other.
Oh I've been to TN a few times, and I wouldn't suggest it's the backwater, it just isn't the international tourist magnet or business hub that say the I95 cities in the North East or the large Pacific coast cities are.

One thing that is absolutely clear is that the 2 most neo-liberal countries in the world, by far - USA and UK - have the two highest death numbers. The governments of both of those countries are trying to re-open, before testing capabilities are in place. This can only lead to these two countries streaking ahead further with mortality numbers. It can also only lead to the conclusion that to neo-liberal ideology people are expendable, wealth for the elite isn't.

But ir's not is it. It is up to individual States when they want to open up the economy. Here's a little stat to show how different it is here in Tennessee than in Teesside. TN population (approximates) 6.829 million COVID deaths 237. Teesside population 672,500 COVID deaths 1,418. As you can see TN has a population 10 x greater than Teesside and total deaths are only 1 sixth of Teessides.
Getting hammered now, though.

20 days later and the USA aint looking any better, got uglier as events show.
I said within 3 weeks of Trump getting in that at some point mass riots will occur. Now the issue of police brutality against black people might not be specifically his issue, but he has shown a completely antagonistic attitude to black rights while showing a passive attitude to for right white-supremicists. So he has certainly created a poisoned atmosphere and emboldened racists to keep doing what they do.

With over 100k deaths due to the pandemic it looks like Trump has washed his hands of the public health crisis and turned his attention to being head of a military state. Bone spurs be damned when you can tell the real troops what to do.
I hope each and every one of the US senators who ignored the opportunity to save the US constitution enjoy eating that big slice of humble pie that Adam Schiff should be sending them with an accompanying 'I told you freaking so!' card.

Your point still stands but those are Covid-19 cases (approx) on Teesside not deaths.

Spot on Zorro, and I've been with you all the way. Looking back at some of the things people said about him, that he'll calm down in office, that he isn't stupid, that there are controls in place that will hold him back. There are a lot of people with egg on their face. What he has shown is that the constitution isn't fit for purpose anymore, that patriotism can still be weaponised, that elections are nothing but lip-service to democracy and accountability is nowhere to be seen. It's pretty similar here as we see BoJo and his travelling circus do a watered down version of Trumpism.

These people (Trump, Cummings, Johnson, Bannon, Banks, Bolsonaro etc.) are not democratic, they're absolute libertarian's. The destruction of state controls so that they can disrupt for personal gain is what matters to them.

What I really struggle with is how the brown-nosers in the Senate still allow him to get away with it.
That’s the mystery for me as well as trump is trump a carpetbagger sociopathic egomaniac who is soon to be resigned to the dark chapter of us history along side The likes of Nixon etc but these are seasoned politicians who are not playing at this and still they defend him all bar mitt Romney who dared step out of his shadow.

It shows that power is by far and away the priority. I'm under no illusion that it's a priority for most politicians, but I don't think I'd ever really appreciated the depths they'd stoop to, pretty much to a man/woman, to get it.

Its frightening. As bad as our system and politics is, we've nothing on the US. Although I worry were headed in that direction.

That worries me too - especially as we're planning to retire and come home next year. Can't take any more of the shïtshow here.

Out of the fire and into the frying pan?

I envy you having lived there, fascinating country with many positives. My aunt and cousins are American and they're great. But I wouldn't want to be there now.
