The United ***show of America

I know we moan about our government, but the US is an absolute mess right now.
Not only do you have possibly the worst person in charge, but they are hurtling towards a re-opening of the "greatest economy in the world" because said economy is being exposed for the lie it is.
On one hand you have the President saying it's not his responsibility to do a raft of things that might reflect badly on him and on the other hand you've got him claiming credit and powers that he doesn't deserve or have. His right-wing cohorts are starting to justify deaths as a price worth paying to restart the economy (or line their pockets).
Last night he had his team produced a chart with the number of deaths per 100k of population to show how well they have done and then he interrupted Dr Birx to ask the assembled reporters if they believed the figures for China and Iran. As if it were a ******* contest and he's celebrating that he's avoided killing many more.
The day previously he'd tweeted and spoken in support of the protesters who were urging Democratic governors to lift lockdowns and possibly create a second wave of infections.
It's this last thing that exposes the lie of their economy. It's not just gun-toting, 2nd amendment Trump groupies who are protesting, it's also small business owners who haven't been able to secure loans from the bail-out package before it ran out or was taken up by companies who didn't really need it and also ordinary folk who simply can't survive on the one-off payment of $1200 or have been unable to claim unemployment benefit. This one-off payment hasn't even reached everyone yet because those without direct deposit facilities are having to wait for a cheque to arrive in the post. Cheques which are delayed while Trump has his name printed in the memo section.
Many Americans are clearly living payday to payday and this coupled with the way their society works is forcing people to want to go back to work even if it means they'll get ill and possibly die. There are record numbers using food banks, lines of cars queuing overnight to get enough food to feed their families.
It should make us wake up and think.

You missed the bit about health insurance - no-one really knows whether or not the Government will actually pick up the tab for COVID-19 testing, let alone treatment. This, of course, means people avoid going for a check-up and the lack of sick pay means they keep going to work......

In another typical example of how the US is handling things:

Those making $1 million or more stand to benefit most from tax changes Congress adopted as part of the $2.2 trillion coronavirus-response package, according to the findings of a nonpartisan congressional report made public Tuesday.

[...]the nonpartisan congressional body found that nearly 82% of the benefit will go toward people making more than $1 million.

CoVid-19 bailout helps millionaires

Every other country's numbers will begin to go down and the USA will continue to go up. There is no leadership, relying on governors of states to make up their own rules so Trump can distance himself from any blame.
Lots of bonkers examples, Jacksonville beach opened up by the governor of Florida, even though the state has higher numbers than the entire country of South Korea.

You might also notice that he was selective about which Governors he called out for lockdown. They were all Democrats. Mainstream TV isn't even covering his daily "briefings" now as he is just using them to campaign for the next election.
According to one legal analyst's view that I read today, what Trump is doing could be seen as inciting insurrection against the legally-constituted state authorities, which is a federal crime.

The problem with that is that he has now, in effect, taken over the Supreme Court. The best hope for prosecution will come when he is no longer in office. New York will be after him in a big way.

There was a photo of a beach in Florida that covered two counties. One half had locked down and the other hadn't. It was quite literally a line in the sand.

The fundamental problem though is that most of this won't come back to bite him. It will cement his support further. The people who are already disgusted by the guy wouldn't have voted for him anyway
People in this country were frustrated by Brexit one way or another, but imagine the frustration of being a normal decent person in America and being subjected to the Trump leadership and his cronies

As much as I love taking the **** out of the orange menace I am finding it harder and harder to laugh at his incompetent presidency and instead I'm getting more prone to commenting on how much of a monster he is.
This latest superlative filled drive to praise his administration backed by Kushner saying that people want to stay in lockdown permanently just shows how little humanity he has. Add in his right wing cohorts who are borderline sociopaths and you really do have to feel for all the decent American citizens who are dieing and suffering under his absolute lack of humanity.
He has it within his power to authorise FEMA to release funding to allow the dead to be buried, but as those bodies pile up and their families face massive income problems, possibly struggle to get any government assistance and may have to queue for food handouts he hasn't done so.
No doubt as this issue gains publicity then he'll be more likely to do something.
He is an orange husk of inhumanity.

He's just a pathetic spoilt child, he really is.

He's trying to save himself, by "trying" to "save the economy", and just let the deaths escalate. He's not bothered about the latter as he thinks the economy being saved will override this, or he can just try and blame someone else. The big problem he's going to have is the majority of the money is not even visible, but the deaths and carnage will be. Saying that, Americans are weird/ not fully developed, and you would have thought they would have banned guns a long time ago but they haven't.

America will just go round and round in circles, and not ever being in a position to control the spread, so it can be tested, tracked and traced. If you can't get that point, then there is no chance of getting back to normal. If they can't get it under control then America will effectively just become isolated from the rest of the world, which will screw their economy massively.

There is no way in hell, that they will have this under control by October/ November, unless they're all singing from the same song-sheet and locking down, all at the same time. This "united states" is really going to bite them in the ass, as the republican ones or those down the middle are going to sink the rest of the ship, unless the democratic ones can close their state lines. Come October/ November I bet nearly every major economy in the world has got this down to less than 5-10 deaths per day and the way America are going they will still be on over 500. The only thing that would lower the number is their $hit healthcare stop taking people in are recording it as Covid, or they run out of vulnerable people as they're all dead.

We've got it bad here, but if I was a democrat living over there in New York or California, then I would literally be banging my head against a wall.

Has to be said though, no matter how badly they appear to be handling it, and how much of a lunatic they have in charge, their death rate is far lower than ours, and far lower than a lot of countries.

The USA is a large country. The death rate per million population is 193 in the USA; in Europe it's 175. The population densities are very similar as well.

It's hardly a lie though. A quarter of the world's GDP, bigger than the next two countries added together, and a lot of it in hi-tec and pharma.

It is a lie because it is concentrated into a small number of very deep pockets. The majority of people in USA don't benefit from having the best economy. Their economy is based on the vast majority of people living paycheck to paycheck with no healthcare, no security net or no savings. They can't complain because they can be fired without cause across most of the country. They work far more hours than we do and the legal minimum holidays is lower than our bank holidays. They aren't required to be given annual leave. It is mental.

At least over here even the worst off receive accommodation, benefits and access to healthcare. Sick pay could be far better but in general 99.99% of people aren't going bankrupt because they had an illness.

Also, people above are commenting on the right wingers behind Trump but both parties are right wing. The left wing in USA is a tiny percent in a couple of richer states with no hope of being elected. It's the right vs the further right.

It's always staggered me that a country like the US that claims to be the biggest and best one in the world doesn't have a full public healthcare system like ours.
