Who was the most disappointing signing we’ve had

Look, I loved him, but… Talent and previous performances vs what we got out of him, Mendieta?

He really was far and away one of the best midfielders in Europe. Couldn’t believe it when we signed him on a free for four years, gobsmacking.

Imperious in a few games and really good for a couple of seasons, but was very disappointing the way his career fizzled out with us.
Watch the cup final in Cardiff again hes the puppet master he was superb that day.

He is mine as well muttley a true icon of the global game. Renowned the world over for his free kicks (a kind of pre Robert Carlos) in serie a with Genoa and esp for Brazil.

And well he was a bit meh wasn’t he
Didn't branco score a screamer from about 45 yards for us? Not saying he was a good signing, he was awful, and I heard a story he asked Robson to do the half time team talk when we were loosing. Robbo said OK go for it.

Brancos team talk was "Pass pass, shot score, nightclub, yes?"

There have been so, so many over the years. It's far easier to list the players who have arrived with a reputation and lived up to it.

Some of the much vaunted players who did play well on the field turned out to be boatloads of trouble off it as well.

Since Juninho, I can hardly think of anyone who was bought for significant money and significant reputation who lived up to their reputation on the field, and left without damaging the club or badmouthing it or leaving under some other cloud.

For example - Alves - never looked anything like the player we thought we were getting.
Ravanelli - looked great on the field but created huge issues in the dressing room and within the club.
Merson - great on the field but left when Villa sniffed about and blamed the club for his own demons.
Ziege - looked great, turned it on and then left as soon as the opportunity arose.

McLaren probably signed most of the successful post MK1 Juninho.

Southgate (obviously)
Boateng
Zenden
Viduka
Hasselbaink......

didn't he hit the post behind the goal at home to arsenal from about 45 yards and it hit the other side of the back of the net. most of us thought it was in initially.

Maybe, I remember something along those lines. Erimus will be along in a minute with the gazette report on the game.

aye it was something like that. He only scored 2 for us both against Hereford. One was direct from a corner, the other he almost just charged into the ball inside the area.

Oh he was absolutely magnificent. Puppet master is a great way to describe it. And of course the Man United 4-1 at home which was his masterpiece.

I know we did this thread a few months ago but when you rate Boro players when they were at their peak (rarely at Boro!), hard to look past Mendieta, alongside Boksic, Souness, Juninho, Gazza, Woody.

There were quite a few disappointments who used Boro as their springboard to retirement under Bryan Robson, a final payday. However, I was watching Man U play last Wednesday night against Atalanta and noted that Martin de Roon was as just as energetic, without purpose, mirroring the year he had at Boro. Someone must see something that eludes others, but he's a multi millionaire from playing football which proves the adage , "if you can fake sincerity, you have it made".

Beck always tried, I don’t think he was half hearted I just think he wasnt as good as most of his teammates.
I agree and rav ruined him by screaming at him for most of the games they played together in I had no time for Ravanelli. You will never find another professional footballer who is so one footed.

Agree with Kris Boyd and would add Kevin Thompson from around the same time.

Can't agree with Maccarone or Alves. Think they both were messed around a little too much. In and out the team, and not having the right players behind them.

But I do think Aliadiere was a big disappointment. Had heard of him loads before we signed him and always assumed he'd be the next amazing Arsenal player ala Bergkamp, Henry, Van Persie. Then we got him and he was just a fast lad and not much else.

Alliadere was a joke at Arsenal though, he was rapid but couldn’t pass or shoot. It’s why he was so cheap. He couldn’t score in an arsenal team full of amazingly talented players creating loads of chances every game so god knows why Southgate thought he could do it for us.
