Laptop Recommendations

Yes, exactly. An older processor with more memory will work better than a faster processor working with less memory. 16Gb is enough, 8Gb will only be OK if you close apps or programs you aren't using.
but it’s much easier to get the best processor you can now and put an extra stick of 8gb ram in (£30?) Next year or whenever he has a few Bob to spare.

those recent ryzen mobile processors are great. By the way

A couple of months ago I bought a Walmart brand laptop for $360. Only Ryzen 3 and I spent another $50 to replace the memory with 16GB. 1920x1080 resolution and a great battery life. You really don't need to spend a fortune.

Agreed!

had a look at that one, but was leaning towards an Intel processor, i dont know why really, other than i hadn't heard of Ryzen - is it any different to Intel?

You won't notice a difference when using it.

Ryzen is better value for money in my eyes as the core count is generally higher for the same money (This lets the laptop do stuff in the background without affecting what you're doing in the foreground). Personally, i would buy Ryzen every time.

As others have said I think it's more or less equivalent to an Intel i5. I'm no expert though and had to look this up.

I think i'm going to go with the Asus one - not to worried about screen size as i have a 2nd 24 inch monitor at home. I've ruled the Acer out (not sure i can live with a bright red thing!). The only real difference between the Asus and the lenovos is the bluetooth, but i dont really connect anything to my laptop via bluetooth, maybe some bluetooth headphones, but that's it really. Will may have to buy a USB port

Artie - you will also be able to deduct the price of the laptop on your tax return. Keep the receipt.

Artie, here's a great laptop for just under £500 - intel processor with a Huawei laptop.

Cheers, looks like the same one as glovers_elbow posed above, only with Intel rather than Ryzen and 50 sheets less. Only issue with it is that's is Huawei, I've been a bit put off with them as a manufacturer because of some bad press. Daft maybe I know, but our IT manager wont buy them for work either, he doesn't rte then as a manufacturer. Thanks though (y)

i really wouldn't be put off by it being Huawei, in fact it looks a better made machine than any thing else in that price range ,. I have had Huawei phone for two years and its been as solid as a rock. Its pure politics IT departments and corporates don't want buy Huawei in this country. I would see if one of these either the AMD or I5 is marked down on black friday, amazon are excellent with returns as well if you do run into issues.

I don't know anything about their laptops but agree on the phone front. The are extremely capable and well put together machines

No problem Artie, I have a Huawei phone for my personal phone, and a Samsung Galaxy 10+ for my work phone. Both are excellent, and not suggesting the Huawei is any better than the Samsung but it certainly does everything the much more expensive Samsung does. It's built well too and much less expensive. Not had any experience of the Huawei laptops but if the quality of the phone is anything to go by, I would certainly be willing to give them a try. As @Glover_elbow mentions above, I think the whole US / UK v Huawei thing is based on politics above anything else.

Another alternative might be this? I have used a couple of Medion PCs in the past and always been impressed with build quality and price:-

https://www.aldi.co.uk/medion-14"-notebook-8gb-ram/p/707810411178400

It includes a 3 year warranty too, has a decent enough processor for the light tasks you're looking for along with 8gb DDR4 ram and a 256gb SSD drive. Also has full HD resolution so quite a decent bit of kit really for a the price, especially given the 3 year warranty.

unless you silly enough to buy a macbook they have memory soldered to the the logicboard and cant be upgraded. You have a choice with apple pay double the going ram price at point of purchase to upgrade your ram or stick with a lower spec non-upgradable machine. I cant believe people cant see through apple, overpriced *****.

just seen the Huawei d14 i recommended is soldered as well so your stuck with the ram on that as well

Pretty much all laptops have memory that can't be upgraded now.
