National Lockdown from Wednesday

I’m not saying don’t teach the kids, nothing like that, education is extremely important. But we can still teach them remotely or maybe just delay releasing them from school. I’m not saying just delete one of their school years (that’s my very last choice), just more for giving them more time.
Is leaving school at 17 that much worse than leaving at 16? If so, why?

I assume using the schools as childcare so people can work from home is a big part of it.

Maybe prioritise something which will pay some bills first, as in use that section of “R’ for something that will keep the kids fed? But not overwhelming the NHS, and keeping people alive is still priority no 1 for me.

Kids are spreaders but don’t actually get sick. So he is trying to control the secondary transmissions by keeping everyone at home where possible apart from the schools.

that way it hopefully breaks the cycle and the hospital admissions reduce to be able to stem the flow.

All these measures are just a sticking plaster until a vaccine is produced... expect a similar thing to happen in feb.

Outbound international travel banned unless for work but no mention of inbound travel?

Hmmm.
I was just discussing that with the other half, I suppose there is not that many people who would want to come here as visitors whilst we are in lockdown but still they could have explicitly banned it as they have with outbound travel.

Infected kid = infected mam and dad though, and if they work in public, care or hospitals it’s a problem.
Kids must be a problem as they’re not likely to have symptoms and be detectable, also they don’t wear masks and still mix in groups.

How many Tories will not vote for Lock-down? Not enough to stop it happening but will some want to send a message to Johnson?

You can't play sport or go to church (I'm not even religious) but elite sports can continue. Total joke. More people are starting to realise the numbers don't stack up but until that reaches a tipping point nothing will change and we'll be locked into this for who knows how long.

Elite sport is carrying on as they’re COVID secure and it will help with people’s boredom, watching on TV, I think everyone agrees that is ok?

As for low level sport, I think it’s more to do with people breaking rules. Having played 5-a side at goals on some nights I get why that’s being stopped, and I stopped before it was stopped as it was a joke. Same with weekend sport, loads of clubs have players sharing lifts. I don’t get why golf gets stopped though, must literally be the safest thing anyone can do, looked at risk per hour.

100% agree with this.

Not enough to make any sort of difference, the idea wouldn’t have been suggested if he had any suggestion of opposition

Does the school year have to finish in July and start in September? If so, why?
.

That's an interesting point that's not really occurred to me before. So you could have maybe an extended 8 week winter holiday over peak flu season (or basically whenever the NHS is usually under most pressure) and catch up those weeks in summer?

I'm sure there's lots of reasons why not, but on the face of it seems logical. Particularly given we'll probably have to live with Covid related changes to our way of life to some extent for years.

Yeah, basically, just work it around whatever suits, could have a shorter Easter break too. I don’t get why it’s so rigid. Yeah changing dates isn’t ideal, but I’m sure they can figure it out, every other industry does. Could even catch up an hour a day too, or allow older kids to sack off the subjects they’re not interested in, providing it’s not Maths, English, Science.

All I hear is the teachers not wanting themselves and kids to be in, which I think is right, and certainly safer. End of the day these teachers usually want what’s best for all the kids, more than anyone, so I trust them.
All I hear from the other side is kids must be educated, which is right (nobody says otherwise), but why now? Why at this minute, and why is there no alternative time?

I’m sure there are reasons too, just wouldn’t mind knowing what they are, seeing as education is like 1/3rd of transmission (I think).

He‘s in big trouble then.

My head says the vote will go through anyways as Labour MP's will be whipped into agreeing so as not to make Starmer look like a hypocrite.
My heart hopes enough Labour and Tory MP's put the brakes on the thing.

I’m more meaning if he has got the wrong side of the 1922, which it sounds as if he has.
